It was mentioned in another thread that groundhog and other non-standard hides are shipped to NAFA, some of which are sold private treaty and some of which are sent back to shipper. My question what are properly case skinned, fleshed and dried groundhogs sold for at NAFA? Since they don't have fur, the leather must be worth something to somebody. Since groundhogs here are not available during hibernation, when is the leather saleable or is it always saleable?

groundhogs do have fur and it's more like rabbit than anything else. Can't imagine they're worth anything except when fully prime. If they don't sell them, I doubt they send them back.

Ground hogs are mostly used in fly tieing bus. The fall and winters will bring 3.00 to 5.00 Nafa is not the place to send them. Find someone that buys sq. tials they will buy them

Saw a few being sold at last year's Jersey auction, just a couple dollars each.

Was told the best furs are taken right before they go into hibernation.

You can also check the fur buyers near you. I have one near here that buy them and also sq.skins with tails for fly tieing. You put them up like coyote but leave the tail bone in them and just split the skin in the tail and use borax on it and have them on coon boards. That is how I put them up and sold some.

Did you flesh them? Was it worth it?

The market for groundhogs and similar species is with fly tyers and crafts people. There is also a market for the skulls.

As with fur bearers, the groundhog pelts are better in the winter. Summer pelts have very little value.

Case skin them, flesh, stretch and dry.

Moscow Hide & Fur will pay as high as $20.00 for pelts skinned with the feet on. As high as $10.00 for pelts without feet. Remember - these are TOP prices, not averages.

Ground hog rawhide was once highly sought after for use in making banjos, and some drum heads. Some traditional banjo makers would use nothing else.

We sold them and used borax to help drying, nothing compares to fleshing woodchucks in the summer. Also sold hare feet, feathers and had some ARTSY types pick over our bone piles. The guy that could find a market for about anything is Tom Tyree, if you have a wacky idea of wanting to know if someone will pay you for it he has probably done it! He is hard to catch but easy to talk to.-----------Tom

Heck there are all kinds of "uses" for "properly" handled Groundhog hides ;-)
I make them into Groundhog "bears" and sell them to people who want their own Groundhog Day prognosticators ;-) (Check the date of the pic... and yes the creek is frozen!)

Punxatwney Phil is guarded by armed girl scouts. Doing something bad to Phil, or trying to, would be worse than messing with POTUS. Phil is an icon like Mickey mouse, Rocky the flying squirrel, and Yogi bear, except Phil is REAL!
