Yes i agree, always look forward to next post, and there is no place i would rather spend winter! That wolf snare set up has me intrigued. I want to get into foot holds for wolves yet, we have a 48 check law makes it tuff. Sharing pics makes us all better trappers.

When you set snares on your trail, do you drive over them as you come back on your next check then reset off the back of the sled? I'm trying to figure a way how to do it without getting off the sled and leaving tracks all over.

I guess that would me mine. Maybe I should have taken that last fur handling class huh... So I let my last wolf get a little too dry when I tried to turn it fur side out and pretty much ripped it in half. My temper got the best of me and it will cost me dearly when I get the bill back from Al.. I'm not much of a seamstress either so I brought it to Al. When you handle fur like him, you better know how to sew....

I just walk back on my sled and reset the snare and replace the guide sticks. I should say I crawl over my sled usually falling off and leaving tracks or a body imprint along the trail before the re-make of the snare. This was just good photography here and you don't see all the tracks. This set doesn't work all the time but what it will do is show you where they will go when they go around it when they're spooked. If that is the case just leave this up as a decoy and set their trails on the go arounds.

yep I am a good sewer. thanks to my friends.

I usually just walk in the ski tack of the snow-go. or get off the snow-go and make a horse shoe loop back to the snare. Or just drive pass it,just enough to put the NO# 9 wire back in the right place never getting off snow-go. I never use guide sticks, so this works the best. Also don't catch many wolves with this set, but i usually have other snares off the trail.so when the wolves jump off the trail, i am skining and sewing. laugh as JR pointed out.

Lol I can picture you reaching off your sled getting the snare perfectly in place then rolling off and leaving the prints you didn't want to leave behind lol. Thanks!

If you had a pair of snowshoes with easy binders to put on you could walk back on the snowmobile trail and reset the snare.

Most canines here freak out at snowshoe tracks

I'm glad you mentioned that White because I'd been thinking of trying it. Guess setting from the sled is the best bet then?

They must not want to meet the critter that makes tracks that big, lol.

IF you go by the set, then you walk on your snowmobile trail back to the set, it doesn't look out of the ordinary. If it was just a snowshoe track I would see where that would be a problem. Just a suggestion.

Just came back from an awesome trip out to the trapline. Little cool when I went out but doable. Late start getting going but made up for it on the groomed trail and lack of overflow. Got the fire going in the cabin, grabbed the water jugs, unloaded the sled and on up the line. Was seeing a lot of wolf sign on the creek so had high hopes but low expectations. We had snow, cold weather, warm weather and now cold again. That combination puts traps out of order. As I come up the trail I notice a pee post that I thought about putting on #9 on but never did covered in fresh pee. Dang it, I stop and place a #9 on it and as I'm doing it I hear a chain rattle and walk up in front of the WT and see a gray wolf in a #9 20 yards up the trail in another pee post I made.

Cool. Dispatched her and on up the trail missed 3 more on frozen traps and a couple walk by's.
As I top out Pee Post Pass, which you are in the blind until you are on crest the ridge, I pretty excited. Low and behold a double. Both AK #9's held gray males. Definitely one of my highlights of my trapping memories.

Put them in the sled and headed back towards the cabin. Back at the cabin, got some dinner and went to work pulling the pajamas off the Slide Creek trio. Long night but got those 3 peeled.
Big breakfast in the morn and on up the line. -25 when I left and dropping.
Hard to believe how beautiful it can be even when it's chilly.

Proceeded up to RMC and noticed quite a bit of new sign around it. Picked up a big ol gray male in a snare on the way to the bait. Still pretty soft, probably a day old. Seneker kill spring and toothed cam lock snare did the job quick.

He was 111 pounder in really good shape really long claws. Always amazes me how long their claws are if we have a good snow year.

So Sunday morn I wake up to -34 degrees and didn't put the WT in the shop and also my extension cords are definitely not arctic cords. Round 1pm she finally started and I went on out another leg of the line. Not much fur sign but lots of moose.

Got an infection in my left index finger where I stabbed it a few weeks ago while skinning a wolf. Took some antibiotics and it went away but came back. Was a little worried when it woke me up. Nothing a little whiskey can't fix. The swelling seemed to go down the next day so I stayed out there. Ran cross country to the new line. Missed a few on pee posts and a couple trail snares.

Pretty happy to come on to wolf #10 in a trail snare. 76 pound gray female

Had some good eats while out there on the line.

Wow awesome run! Now I know why I'm not seeing any wolves, they're all over at your place!
