Man! you are lucky to see caribou. Almost finished the 6 from this fall. I wish Fort Yukon would send the Porcupine herd back. My boys went to Herschel Island so I hope they get some caribou down there. Stuck going to training all next week in the capital. So go to traps on Saturday and that will be it for my on the land experiences for the next week.

Excelent job Howler. Keep it coming. You live the good life. If you get tired of trapping you could become a photographer.

A trap is only a trap if you dont know about it. If you know about it, its a challenge

Had a good trip out on the line and a rough one back in to the house. It was just as I expected out on the line. Lots of exposed gear, frozen snares, snares to high, overflow and not much fur for the stretchers. Spent a good deal of time chipping 9's out of the overflow. Pulled a lot of gear due to weather and not seeing much sign.

On the way out, ran 76 miles without a piece of fur until I get to the cabin. Picked up a 23# male coyote in a snare. Just so happens to be the same coyote I snared last season 5 miles above the cabin and chewed out of a wolf snare. He was still wearing the snare when he walked into a 1/16" snare with a Senneker Kill spring and trigger. That put him down quick. The Wolf snare he chewed out of had a Amberg lock with moose stop.

Covered a lot of beautiful country again. Picked up one more moose shed and topped out a couple more passes.

Did some mods to the Tundra and she preformed well. I put a pair of Polaris Profloat skis on it. They are 9 1/2" wide and bolted right on. That took the darting out in the overflow and crusted ice. Then I put plastic under the running boards to stop the spray and drag in the overflow and powder snow. Worked out well also.

Probably 80 miles of my line looked like this.
Picked up a marten in a lynx cubby behind the house. Nice male in a #4 dls. Found a NH 1 1/2 hanging in a tree above my Catch-all set. Interesting to know how long it had been hanging there and who it belonged too.

Had a buddy fly out for coffee. Stip was a little icy.

This has got to be the biggest moose rub tree I've came across.

Had a fine dinner of Mashed potatoes, moose steak and candied parsnips.
On the way home, I belly flopped the Tundra 1 1/2 miles from the house. Sled came out alright but it's Norwegian rider took spanking. May have sprained my ankle, hopefully that's all I did.

Thanks for the update. Dinner looks awesome right now! That trap is strange eh? Must be just one of those good trapping spots.
Take care of that ankle. Good thing you're Norwegian or it may have been worse! LOL.
Take care of yourself. All the best!

Sweet photos and great update on your latest expedition. From the looks of that whiskey and book I'm thinking you might be one of those brother's from a different mother. Thanks for the great posts all winter JR

Thanks for the update. It was nice of that yote to be sitting up waiting to welcome you. Are you going to keep trying for more wolves or call it a season? Hope that ankle heals up quickly!

Was talking to B. Smith yesterday and you came up. It was all good stuff, tho!

Thanks guys. Went to the doc, nothing broke, just bad sprain. They say most accidents happen close to the house and it sure did. Probably gonna pull my gear next week when I go out. Got the ATA auction and banquet on March 21st and 22nd. I personally don't have much fur for the auction this year but got some antlers and skulls to go along with my catch. Got some projects around the house I should be catching up on before spring bear season. Putting up some fur and going back to work tonight.

We had a great monthly ATA meeting this month with Jim Masek as our speaker. As many of you know he is a wealth of knowledge and very woods wise. He spoke on different traps, snares and placement for all species of furbearers. It's amazing how you can pick up some little simple tricks from someone else. If you are not a member of the Alaska Trappers Association, I'd suggest joining. Our new editor Justin is putting out a great magazine with lots of pics and great material.

Smalltimetrapper... Haven't talked to Mr. Smith in a while. Don't think he'll be heading over this spring with the Tanana the way it is. He's one good ol'timer. Lots of respect for that man. Thanks for the note on the box the other day. It's going back though, wrong windshields. Delta
Powersports is making it right. Good people to work with.

ATA auction and Fling is over and was a great success. What a busy weekend and glad it's over. Didn't get any pic posted from last trip out so here goes. 36 below when I left for the cabin pulling gear along the way. Had more snow on this trip than all winter long but the overflow was solid for a change. The new pack of wolves was at the bait but didn't lay any 9's due to the warm weather to come and it wasn't conducive to snaring. Next year I'll change that up a bit.
Picked up this beautiful 27# male coyote in a lynx cubby that the ermine ate all the bait out of the last week, in an uncovered #3 DLS. Unreal how you can be clean and careful and not catch one and then something like this happens.
Spent alot of time pulling gear and not seeing any wolf sign upriver. Covered a lot of country just exploring new passes and valleys.

This used to be a nice tight little valley til the flood of 2007 and last year opened it up. This valley has been good for wolves for many years and they'd only been down it once this entire season.

Put the Tundra to the test and did well. Found out it's hard to ride with one good ankle though. Tipped her over in some dumb spots. Put 1680 miles on it this season even with the late start. Really happy with it. It was -30 on Saturday morn and she didn't start though. Wasn't in a hurry so waited til 11am and -10 and she fired right up.

Spent alot of time cleaning up around the cabin and relaxing. Hate to see the season over but a poor year for fur and weather anyway.

Saw quite a few ptarmigan and Sharptailed Grouse this year. Didn't harvest a single bird this season due to meat in the cooler and didn't need wings and bait since I wasn't trapping lynx or marten. Nice to see their numbers on the increase. On the way home, I saw a otter on top of the overflow on the new portion of the line. He wasn't very photogenic and wouldn't resurface for a photo op.
Got some paperwork to tally up from the auction and get the furs that didn't sell back to the trappers. Heading back out to the cabin for one last ride out exploring and taking a buddy with a Scandic Expedition 900. This will be fun. See ya in a week.
