OK I have said I would put this on here for awhile now, well yesterday I set more cat sets and took a picture of what I call the hollow log set. I use this just for cats here, I think it would be good for fox too but I have never tried it on them, don't seem to catch coyotes either, not sure why yet but I will keep playing with it and see what I can do.

Here is one of the places I put this kind of set, this is a cedar draw and it narrows down right here, there is lots of cat sign right here to.



I put this right in the middle of the drainage so its visible from the bottom and the sides, then I dig my trap bed and place my trap, you can dig the bed and place the trap before you set the log cause you can put the log where ever you need it for the right distance from your trap.





Then you can finish off the trap bed and place your log where you want it, after you get it placed you can bait the hollow log, I place the bait in the hollow cavity and then place sheep wool on top of the bait, the hollow log allows the air to blow though and gets the scent into the air good too, I will give the side of the log a little cat urine too, here is the finished set.



I will usually put a flag some where close to it also, here is a picture of the finished set with a flag up wind of it.

Seems like it would work for fox and coyote too. The log may appear somewhat unnatural at first but I think they would accept it after seeing it for a while. One might want to place those logs in strategic locations before season without lure or bait and let the animals accept them. Just a thought, maybe I'm all wrong hre as I never tried it. Ace

I have used the hollow log set but I always blended my trap covering with chopped grass or other natural ground duff....and I always used a backing, such as up against long grass. Other than that , same set. It does work well in the right circumstance.

Cattrax, What is the material under the trap pan?

My sets looks so "gaudy" compared to your natural looking sets.
The part about having "lots of cat sign" ,, should have you exited to get back and check it! Bet you get one,, or more.

Do you think a freshly cut log will work, say cut about a week ago?

LT that is insulation under the trap pan.

I don't think the time frame would matter to a cat when you cut it.

cattrax is the log hollow clear thru? if so do you plug the opposite end?

Mudtracker some of them are open from one end to the other, the ones that are open all the way through I will put the open end I dont use up against something like a tree or a rock to block that end and make them come to the end of the log where I have the trap.

what if you set on both ends? would that be too much?

I'm sure you could do both ends, but if you did I would want them on a drag so it got away from the log, that way it wouldn't mess up the other set.

I use about any good bait in the sheep wool stuffed up in the log, and then good lure on the outside of the log.

do you really need sheep wool if you have one whole foot of snow?? and should this catch yotes on the side of a road where they have been traveling? oh and can you catch two yotes in the same trap, if there is yotes around, within a week or do they get scared of by the first one caught??
