Here is some information on collecting coyote glands. This will also apply to other canines. Another point to consider is that all the lure makers out there have different recipes and may not want every thing listed here. The most common one not wanted is the front foot pads, but I included it so it was covered. I also separate it from the other glands just for that reason.

I went ahead and circled the areas the glands are located so they could be seen before cutting. On the first location on the neck and head there is a large vein that will Y as it goes towards the head. At the base of the Y I will make a cut and start to cut the skin forward. It will reveal a quarter sized gland. Then skin towards the base of the ear and there is another gland. Continue towards the lower jaw and there is two smaller pea sized glands. Cut those out and repeat on the other side.

The front shoulder is the next set. I make a cut along the front shoulder and skin it down exposing the fat. Now the glands will be located in the fat so cut it away to expose the glands and collect. The anal vent needs to be cleaned up by removing the hair and make sure that the anal glands are not cut off with the skin. After hair removal I will make a triangle shaped cut and pull out the vent. I then push the contents of the vent back into the cavity and then cut off about 6 inches.

I circled the location of the hock glands. They will be located in between the muscles in the fat. They can easily be left on the hide during skinning. If you can not find them here check the hide. They will be about the size of a BB to a pea. The next gland is the bladder. I will make this horizontal cut and often the bladder is just under the skin. Sometimes they will be tucked under the pelvis and you will need to dig them out. Next on the female coyote you can see the uterus here. On the males the testicles are sometimes collected. Not many of the lure makers I have talked to want them but some do.

Some want front foot pads. With the leg removed I will make a straight down cut behind the pad then cut towards the front getting as much of the pad and padding as possible. I will then remove most of the hair. For gland storage I will write on a gallon freezer bag and line the inside of a coffee can. As I collect the glands I place them all into the bag (except the pads) until it is full. Every day that you are finished collecting the glands be sure to freeze them. When the bag is full remove it from the coffee can and flatten out and remove the air. Freeze them flat as they will store easier and ship better.

Hope this helps...Jason

This is the first year I have been catching enough yotes to mess with glands. I have been saving just the anals and the hock glands as I thought those were all the lure makers were interested in. Do most of those buying or trading for glands want all those mentioned other then pads? If so and I start collecting those others shown in your tutorial would I need to freeze separately to appease the lure maker or can they be froze all together?
Thanks for your information posted.

It will depend on who is buying your glands, each lure maker is different. The ones I high lighted are generally the ones that they want, and I put them all together and freeze fresh. I only collect organs, testicles, and pads if I have a specific request for them.
