Go to a local butcher shop and buy cattle lard. Works great even in the winter if it freezes. Smell does not travel as far in cold air but the sun warms it up even when really low temps show up. Heard around my area of mixing mink and muskrat glands and/or fat to add a different smell.

Send Bud Guidry a PM. His is home made and I will put it against most commercial baits.

A quality commercial bait is not expensive at all, and its very accessible.

I alway's thought that as effective as most baits such as O'gorman,RK's or cavins were that they were cheap for what you are getting. The fuel you spend on the extra trips to harvest the critters is what costs. Saying all that I alway's have a couple of my own I play with.Good luck with what ever you come up with. smile

I tell you the best response I have had on canines for homemade bait this year was a simple concoction of bacon-grease bait which Lazarus a member on here had posted a recipe on. It's cheap as heck to make, and the coyotes/fox just refuse to walk by it. When I get home I can post some pictures of a fox. I had placed the bait three weeks prior. Once he found the location of the bait he returned the next 6 nights, and marked the location. It also seems to drive them to dig.

If you look at these pictures the nose in the first picture is where the bait was placed 3 weeks prior. There are two pictures where the dates are same but notice the times. He was there at midnight the one night and around 11 p.m. the very same night. This bait has brought me up to three coyotes marking/sniffing in one picture, and even draws in the cats if you add that last simple ingredient. Hope this helps. If looking for the bait search Lazarus or Bacon bait on here.

The last one was of the day I checked the camera. I'm sure if I would have left it up he would have returned.

I've had success with fat from lambs and beef, ground up with some liver. Also, fresh chicken guts work great around me as most of the foxes have killed a few chickens before they get very old.

something wrong with that first picture. right foot is right behind the foxs nose. must be a deformity as we all know trap would have to be set back 6 inchs and off set to the right. fox birth defect?
