Its a self fungus (conk) used for artist work. It grows on a variety of trees, usually dead or dying.

find them on oak here, I harvest and use in place of ganoderma lucidum. Old chinese medicine, with current studies showing it an effective at balancing the immune system. Used alot like ginseng
