Ducks in the Decoys
It was a cold fall morning. This morning I was doing one of my favorite things to do duck hunting. The smell of duck swamp filled my nostrils as my dad and I paddled our canoe up the little channel that wove through the cattails and floating bog. The only sound that broke the silence was the splish splash sound of our paddles as we paddled our way to the blind. After quite some time we finally reached our destination unloaded the gear the dog and set out decoys.
As the first rays of sun came up the first flock of ducks came in three mallards. I griped the checkered gray stock and forearm of my gun. When they got close I jumped up and my finger reacted automatically it clicked the safety off and pulled the smooth gold colored trigger bang, bang, bang 2 ducks fell. The dog retrieved them and when she came in I petted her wet hair on the head and congratulated her. After about 10 minutes another flock of mallards came in except this time there was about 20 of them. They circled once at about seventy yards and started flying away. I picked up the duck call griped the wood neck in front of the silver ring and let out a welcome call quack, quack, quack, quack, quack. The ducks swung around at about one hundred yards and came in with wings set. Again the gun flew to my shoulder and bang, bang, bang this time 5 ducks fell. We took the canoe out to get the ducks because it was too much work for the dog.
After another hour of hunting we got our limit of ducks and a single goose. As we were picking up decoys some ducks came in and landed in the decoys that we hadn’t picked up, but the dog scared them off quickly. We finally got packed up and went back to the landing. It was a cold fall afternoon, and earlier today I was doing one of my most favorite things to do duck hunting. As we left the land the smell of duck swamp filled my nostrils.
