There has to be an easier way to check the advance.I see you are right there is no brown wire any more. I just don't know if the computers would be the same. I'll keep googling.

You can watch spark advance on a scan tool, but in all my years of standing under these things, I can't recall more than a handfull of times an ECM went bad after '96. On the other hand I've replaced a pile of dist's you couldn't hardly see over wink

A random miss is one of the hardest things to diagnose. Just start going through things cheapest first.
The fuel pump could cause your problems. Do a pressure test on the pump.
I agree, with the knock and miss, it does sound a lot like timing. It could be a number of things. The distributor is usually the most common point of failure, but it expensive to swap out. Pull it and see if there is anything obvious that can be causing the shaft and rotor to wobble kicking it out of time. Also check everything else that was mentioned so far on here.
Another thing to check out is the intake manifold gasket. It is probably fine, the gasket will usually isolate the miss to one or two cylinders. The 98 5.7 liter engines were known for blowing the intake gaskets. If this happens it kills the cylinder the intake dumps into, it will also effect vacuum and cause random problems. Test this with a can of carb cleaner. Squirt it around the gasket area while the engine is idling. If it is leaking the cleaner will be sucked in and change the idle.

Had a problem similar to that once. Change the distibutor cap and it'd be fine after 3-4 caps I knew soemthing wasn't right. Turned out it was a TPS - throttle position sensor, 25 bucks.

As possumslayer says, intake gasket failure is common in these trucks and can cause the symptoms you describe. It just takes a very small leak to cause a miss at first. I cant remember the cylinder # but it usually starts with the back right hole, cylinder closest to pass seat. Then moves to multiple misfires.

I'm still working on it as I have time. It's definetly not fuel and does not appear to be an intake manifold gasket. I'll put a meter on it to further check for vacuum leaks. I still haven't swapped he distributor.

Thanks again.

I finally took the time to work on this truck a little more. Thanks for everyone's help. There is no compression in cylinders 3 and 5. Looking like a blown gasket or a cracked head.

done a bunch of those in the shop, blown gasket. the other side will last an
bout another year or so before it goes. some folks want a quick fix so I don't even take the intake off on those, just roll the head out from inunder it and back going in short time.

Didn't know that could be done. I think I'll replace them all to save some headache next year.
