Protected here, don't know where they went use to not be able to keep em out of a trap. Most of the land been clear cut at some point and time and there a pile of owls, more then it use to be so I wonder if they could have hit em hard over the last few years.

The western spotted skunks have a white tip on the tail, unlike the easterns. I will have a couple coming back from Moyles here soon if anyone is interested. No feet, just wall hangers.

I think Oregon and then south Dakota are the 2 states where trapping civets is legal and they have a fairly large population.

We sell a fair number at the trapper sales in Oregon.

NAFA and FHA occasionally offer civets but only in small quantities. Usually 10 skins or less. They are in the skunk catalog and not designated as civets so you have to be there to look at the pelts to know which lots are the civets.

I caught ONE in 1984 matt, only one ive ever caught though I trapped that same ground every year, no idea where that ONE came from, lol. Haven't seen one in years now though. And all of that land where that one was caught was clear cut to the ground in the early 90's! Remember it being so small I had to put it on a mink stretcher.

If they are tanned properly there isn't any smell on the hide.

Nancy,
You forgot WA.
Undamaged brought $16.50 at NAFA last sale. I know there were more then 10 becuase I had 27 on the sale. I currently have 7 with the feet on at Moyles. I can post a pic when they get back.

Bruce -

Guess I didn't realize Washington had so many civets.

I wasn't at the last NAFA sale, but when I have been at NAFA sales, there have only been a handful of civets, if any.

Sounds like you got a pretty good price for the ones you had there. Were they all in one lot?

They were in three lots. I had a few damaged ones. I think the average on all was $14.70. Built some new cage traps to eliminate the damaged ones so hope not to have that happen much anymore. I think most get sold privately. I know I have went that route with most of mine in the last few years. I only sent the ones without feet to NAFA. Most I've caught in recent years was 73.

Legal to take here when in season, used to have quite a bit of them around mostly in the eastern regions of the state, Vernal area.

Usually some at our auctions, not as many as used to be for some reason. Same with ringtails which many people get them confused with.

Most are caught in bobcat sets as they seem to move around in the same type of areas, they are much more likely here to be seen in higher elevations than the striped skunks.

I've made quite a few Mt. Man hats out of them, takes about four to five though as they are small, but with all the spots and stripes they really look cool.
