I know this has been a topic but I can't seem to find it. What is a home product I could use to preserve the skin?

Half and half gycol and alcohol will do if your not going to be wearing it or making a product for wearing.

You can tack it out flesh side up and completely cover it with alum. After it drys real good take it off the board and scrape the alum off. Then soften it up a bit with neatsfoot oil.

You also can "tan" them with Prestone Antifreeze. Once it soaks in, soften the leather with neatsfoot oil.

Thanks I will give it a try tomorrow. I skinned one out late day and left it stretched out on a 2x6. I didn't have any right product to treat it. It is at the cacin and will go back tomorrow and take care of it. Thanks

What are you using it for? For bow backing you want clean degreaser snake rawhide, for hat bands and such, you want leather. For bow backing, the scales come off. Maybe for leather too. I have backed lots of wood bows with snakeskin.

Mix 50-50 alcohol to glycerine. Skin and scrape snake. Tack skin on a board fleshed side up. Nails every 1/2" or so. Paint glycerine solution on skin and cover with Saran wrap. Make good contact to the skin with the wrap. Uncover skin and reapply solution for 7 days. Remove skin and wipe dry. It's now pliable and ready for use.

Your near by Pharmacy will carry the gycol or alcohol, you can substitute glycerin if it's there.

I took all the comments from you guys and things went really well. It turned out good I think. The pictures are the fleshed side and the outer side looks good. Very soft and workable. The question is has any used a varnish or poly product over a snake skin this would for project I want to do.

50% denatured alcohol and 50% Glycerine in a Gatorade jar, or something similar. Put skin in, set the jar by a door that you use a lot , every time you go in or out, give it a good shake. Do this for a week or two then pin it or hang it to let it dry.

I had one similar and glued it to a big slab of walnut and shearlacked it, lasted for years hanging on the wall.
