I am fairly happy with my results. I hoped my coons would have done better than they did. The 30 buy backs are all good coons though. I had several early coons from NOV and late coons from FEB that hurt the average. If the Private treaties go well, yotes and cats reach my expectations I will accomplish the $ amount it will take for me to make the $2/hr pay scale I needed to hit.

For Arkansas I'm pretty happy.
Otter - $106 avg
Raccoon - $23.02 avg
Muskrat - $12.75 avg
Beaver - $21.00 avg
Grey Fox - $39.00 avg

No way I'd have gotten that locally.

You didn't get that yet....waitin on a check.....could have sold local money in pocket even if it was a little less. Minus commissions tumbling. When market goes down fur just sits at NAFA, you'll sure wish you'd kept a loal guy in business who'd still buy it.

You get paid once a day at your job? You know, punch out and they hand you that day's earnings?
I don't: I get paid every two weeks.
I can wait!

No local buyers. I'm happy, this time, and realize things are what they are when I'm a bit disappointed.
Choices: we got 'em, we make 'em, and we live with them.

I can understand your side as well...at times it does pay to wait. The point is how easy trappers forget how fur can sit up there till next year while the auction house sits on it. A good local buyer can buy into your fur saving your butt on those bad years and make his down the road. It's good to have options. Kinda like going to WalMart and saying goodbye to the mom and pop.

LOL, I KNOW what it's like to have fur sit up there so long it has to apply for Canadian residency! And I WISH I had more local options, but things are what they are, at least for here and for me, and I know the risks when I play NAFA roulette!

When NAFA is not moving fur you are probably not getting squat from your local buyer either. Probably not a bad time to be holding your fur anyway, and they do the storage. Buy backs are part of the marketing game. As much as it sucks to see one of your lots held back it certainly improves the bidding and ultimate price of the remaining goods.

Everything I sent has been sold but for one coyote and for some reason NAFA held that one for this auction. It should go on the auction block this morning. Other than possums which I refuse to ship to them, I'm pretty happy with NAFA.

I'm thinking that there are going to be guys with western lynx cats that aren't going to be too happy with prices. They probably could have gotten more selling in the country or at a trappers sale, like Fallon or Klamath falls.

This is 2 years in a row that May has been down mostly 20-25% from Feb. That has not always been the case, especially on cats. Still good prices but obvious incentive to get as many as you can to the Feb auction.

24 coon - Average $34.30. Would have been over $39 average but I had 4 coon that I had to store (I thought frozen) in a cooler until I could get to them and they had some slippage.

2 cats - Average $650 Makes up for the $150 cat from Feb.

Could say I am somewhat pleased with my first year of trapping! laugh

????

If it wasn't sold it was "bought back"

How do you know that what you had was offered and not bought back?

Here are my results ending today. Over all I am really pleased. My coyotes didnt do what I expected. However I did have a $60, $50,$10 x4 and I cant remember the others. The buy backs tried to sell at $42. My thirty coon are some better coons and even at the average below I have another $540 in coon. Top coon was brought $37. My cats averaged with in .80 of what I was expecting. They where all Med RD and VRD. Top cat was $86. Most of my beaver was bite up and some was damaged from a brand new Sheffield but still struggled threw at where I wanted to be. Top Beaver brought $70. My otters excedded my expectations.

Its good to see the fruits of two months labor. My fur brought 200% - 400% better than last year. My second year was a blast and I continue to learn usually threw error.

I don't know what the deal is with crap beaver or what I use to call crap beaver, we ended up with a beaver at one of the workshop's for the kids this winter after they all had left so it was sent up to the sale and whatever it brought will be donated to the workshop's. It looked like swiss cheese, lol. Still it brought 16.00! No idea what they're planning on doing with that junk, lol.

Overall an excellent sale for me....all buybacks (raccoon and beaver) sold yesterday.

Just waiting for 4 black bears to sell, if they go it will be 100% clearance for me.

I guess Wisconsin yotes are not in much demand. I got $10 for the one I had in the sale yesterday. No worth skinning. Possums and skunks are easier to work with and it wouldn't take as much effort to make the same ten bucks. found a half eatten fawn yesterday, sure do hate yotes!

On the plus side, I have everything sold!

I hate to admit it,but this stuff happens. First the other 54 coon weren't even showing up so I got on the phne and was assured they were received and on the auction. Now they show up on paper but no record of their sale. These coon skins were shipped through me and we ticketed them and shipped them to Stoughton. I have been communicating with trapper85 from the get-go,and I feel his pain. BUT these raccoon are in the system and he will be paid for them. I know this is not what this shipper wants to here, and I would feel the same, but in 22 years as a NAFA agent I have never abandoned a shipper and I won't now. This is a computer fu and it will resolve itself. Terry

Beaver was a huge disapointment for us, we had 98 there that were all caught through the ice, none of that easy open water beaver trapping, but they averaged almost $10 less than our fall beaver. We had lots of heavy selects,* etc.. The same grade of beaver that brought us $86 in the fall brought $53 now, $64 beaver then brought $49 now. Then $53 semi slights same size I* select heavies brought $49 now. They basically gave them away,we guess to get a higher clearance percentage?
On top of that 17 of our beaver were missing,I tried calling and calling to find out what was going on, to no avail. Then after the sale I was able to e-mail someone and they searched the place and found, what they say are our beaver in someone else's box that was marked to save for 2014. They have now offered to grade them and pay us for them according to what the grade sold for at auction,or save them for the 2014 sale.I sent them another e-mail asking if they could give us the size and color of them, so we can be sure they are ours.We have our doubts if they will be graded fairly, as they have no profit to be gained on them. What would you do?

Once I found out if they are mine I would have them graded but have NAFA hold them till next Feb. when the market could be better than at present. I don't think they would intentional cheat you It may be a blessing in the long run to sell them next year unless you really were counting on the money now.I think with a short spring harvest in the north and prices that won't get people trapping beaver like they will rats and coon . Beaver could be real good next Febuary.

It means the goods were not sold.

The buyers in the auction room were not willing to pay the price NAFA wanted.

If those goods are not sold private treaty over the summer, they will be offered again at the February 2014 sale.

I send to both auctions.Beaver all go to FHA.Better price and better clearance. The Jan beaver sale at FHA has been exceptional the last few years with early fur(oct)from this area going for 40 to 50 dollar averages.Lynx and Marten back and forth, everything else to NAFA,lately lynx has been better at FHA but the latest sale NAFA caught up in that department. The edge on marten in my opinion has been with NAFA on the overall avg(for my type of fur).
This is my honest opinion based on my sales of my fur,and comparing fur receipts with other trappers in my area who sell to both houses.
I would give the edge to Nafa on Otter, but FHA does get good prices for Northern Otter
We dont have coon here so I cant say and I dont catch enough rats to worry about it one or the other.

Wish I could do that with the possums we have here in Wisconsin, but unless you throw a lot in the brush it won't happen. I got tired of the hard grade and low prices given by NAFA on possums. Now I sell to a private buyer who pays $2 each for all of them with no grading. Over all I do better this way. NAFA only wants to biggest and best possums, so what do you do with the rest of them??? They once told me only one in 2 doz is worth skinning. I can't afford to skin them for 20 cents and then pay them for giving them away. I still ship most of my fur to NAFA, but have learned the hard way some things are better sold at other places.

It was a first for me, usually average less than $2.00 for my possums. I don't catch a whole lot of possum or coon so I put up all my possum, even the dinks. Figure if I can flesh a possum without putting holes in it, it's good practice.

Well,NAFA has been really nice about the whole thing, they graded out the 17 ones that they found and they will buy them for $724, which is what they would have sold for at the auction. But ,and its a big BUT the colors do not match up, meaning I had 6 black ones in this sale and they only counted 4, so if they are missing, what others are not there? I just sent them an e-mail stating this, and I will call in a bit,so we will see?
I ship to bot NAFA and Fur Harvesters, I quit NAFA in the 90's, when they collected my furs then cancelled the sale and sold my pelts for pennies on the dollar in the fall. We sent some to them this year since in Alaska our marten were always a couple bucks less than our friends. But this year our FH marten out did our NAFA marten.Fur Harvesters always seemed to be a little better on Lynx, our two left from last year sold high in the FH March sale.
But me moved here from Alaska for two reasons, one is to trap and the other is so our son can live in a small town and see what that life is like, as he is 19 going on 20 and this is the first time we have had a place with indoor plumbing. It is not taking long for him to figure out that the woods are better.
