Using ground up carp, gar, and mackerel as bait. 40 or so traps. And lots of ground to trap. This year i figured out for te most part that trapping coons away from water isnt ideal.(for me at least) so ill be by the river. Caught 30 this year trying for 70 next. What can i do to raise my numbers? Thanks

if you have the numbers of coons there 40 traps can catch you a ton of coons , the main key to big numbers is to have the critters there to begin with

It's simple find out where they are feeding. Set as many traps as you have. Catch the cream and move on to the next feed source. Later In the year when all the crops are havested and the berry crop Is no longer around and the nut crop has been eaten. Then you need to get In the water and stay there.

Set your traps in the best possible spots. If you have plenty of ground and plenty of coons, set the best spots, 40 coon sets in a day shouldn't be to hard to get in. I like pockets the best, quick, easy, and productive. Set as often as you can and 70 coons shouldn't be a problem for you! Good luck!

i thought of it this way when i changed goals from 50 coon
to 75... if i can catch 10 coon per farm, i only need 7-8
farms with a dozen traps. move traps in, set a week, move
to the next farm. in theory this is extremely possible. in
practice you have to have the numbers! i had my 8 farms, but
late season the coon were not at the place i planned to catch
the last of my 75... had to set 3 places that i hit earlier,
but found more numbers than i expected there too! the hay
barns were being emptied, so the coon were moving around a lot.

also happened that the farmer was feeding the cows to finish
them for market... so they were easy to catch there.

More property to trap is key to getting more coon

I agree you have to have the coon to catch big numbers. Plus be willing to work at it.

My strategy has always been to use blind trail sets for coon, footholds along the water's edge and 220 bodygrips on the brushy, dry land trails, bodygrip traps are legal on land in Louisiana. With the arrival of the newer style dog-proof traps,I would incorporate their use on the more open, well worn trails,in an effort to cover all my bases on the coon travel ways. In my opinion, having different types of traps set in different types of locations will increase the number of coon a trapper will catch and the larger the number of traps you have set in these types of locations, the more coons you will be skinning at days end, simple arithmetic. Good luck, with enough land to trap, this strategy has produced a few 1000 coon seasons here,in Louisiana.
