I'm looking to buy some DP traps for this coming season. Never used them before, but like the concept. I see there are close to a dozen different makes. Been hearing a lot about the Coon Dagger, Any suggestions? I apologize if this topic has been covered before, but I checked the Archives and didn't find any current info.
Thanks!

Buy some, try some and make up your mind based on your own experiences. Otherwise, you get everybody elses opinions and you'll have no frame of reference other than their experiences in their regions, which will be different from your own.

Used the dukes this year and like them alot. Have not tried any of the others, but if you go on youtube and search coon trapping with the duke dog proof trap it will pop up with alot of videos. Thats how I chose them. I only had one pull out, which was when the coon got a limb the size of my arm stuck up in the chain and wrung out.

I own 4 different types and my favorite is the bridger and I modify it a little by bending the dog so there's less tension on the trigger and I also turn it into a push/pull trigger.

I prefer the Duke brand dog proof traps. Although I may be a little biased toward the Duke brand, since I use their brand exclusively for all of my trapping needs.

Aren't the Bridger DPs New to the industry just In the last few months.
They all catch coon it's not rocket science. Coon sticks foot In trap, trap goes off trapper skins coon.
Just stay away from EGG traps and CRAPMASTER dps

Z trap, Grizz, Duke, Dagger, can't beat them. Just personal choice which a person likes best. Don't know enough about the Bridger but plan to buy a dozen. I have all the four others and am happy with them all. Leaning to the Dagger but...

I have Dukes and Alcatraz.

They Both have the good points but I think I'm leaning towards the Dukes.

The Alcatraz is an effective trap, sure enough. It's easy to set, easy to clean and wont hurt your 9 year old if he happens to snap one on his fingers playing around with it. The coon will have no foot damage provided he doesn't get the trap hung up in vines and such and twist his wrist apart.

The Dukes are great! If he gets a foot in that he WILL NOT escape! Just don't let your dog stick his tongue in it! shocked They are harder to clean than the Alcatraz but I have fewer misses with them.

Those are the only dog proofs I've tried. I have heard bad things about the Egg. Can't remember the problem with them, just that they aren't as good as the Dukes. As far as the Lil Grizz traps, I see little difference between them and the Dukes. I don't think I would spend the extra money for how close alike they are.

Hey Jeff, I used the z traps last year but I'm not a big coon trapper but they did fine. I like the push pull trigger. I can't compare them to any other cuz I have not used any other kind. Some of my buddies use em and love em!

In WI you can set In the water with a DP with a Pull type trigger before the regular Mink and rat season opens. But that means ONLY with a PULL TYPE TRIGGER. Push/ pull Nope.

It sounds like the Z traps and Dukes have a good reputation. Anyone running the Coon Dagger?
