Not an otter. Different shape, tail was bushy, kind of redish brown in color. Hind legs greater proportion then the rest of the body.

I know they have been spotted in VA, not sure but I think I saw one one night coming home from work but not 100% sure. It could have been an otter but it had a bushy tail. At first I thought it was a mink but too big.
They are protected in VA but they are here.

its entirely possible that you saw a fisher. according to the WV DNR fishers have been documented in every county in wv over the past years.

Jerrys brother, who works for the USDA caught a male fisher in Wayne National Forest in Ohio 2 or 3 yrs ago. he reported the catch..caught while doing a coon density study..in a live trap. to the Ohio biologist.

im sure its within the realm of possibility that one migrated into your area.

Yes, I lived in Cananan valley W.va in 1967, and they wee stocking the fisher from conneticott then. I had a friend the was a conservstion aid at the time that said he had seen one crossing the road on top of cananan mt.
I wonder if they were ever in Ky,( native to); or would be considered invasive?

I live in Hopkins county and have never heard of one being around here. Too many rednecks running around shooting stuff for them to make it long if they poke there head out during daylight hours.

I live in Rowan and trap Triplett a lot. I never said anything to anyone but I was seeing some tracks I've never seen before this year mixed in with the otter tracks. I've never seen a fisher or a fisher track for that matter but maybe that explains some things.

Used to live in Rowan, saw something a few years ago that might have been one. Out of the corner of my eye it looked like a groundhog, but then saw it wasn't a woodchuck. Off it went into the underbrush. Might have been what it was. Was fishing in the north fork of triplett. Live in carter now, and not seen anything like it since.

I most definitely saw a fisher a few years back in Whitley County. It ran out in the road in front of me at Cumberland Falls State Park. They were stocked by Tennessee straight south of us about 100 miles and I figured he was heading back to Wisconsin. Since then I have twice seen fisher tracks in the snow. Someone soon will catch one in Kentucky.
Still haven't seen that mountain lion everyone sees though.
