A reminder that there will be a fur sale in Athol, Idaho on Saturday, February 23. Athol is a small town just north of Coeur d'Alene.

It is held at the community center. They will be checking in fur from 830 AM until noon. It is a sealed bid auction. They hope to read bids about 130 or so - or when ever the buyers are ready.

Last year they had 7 buyers and quite a bit of fur.

Their is a commission to sell, but I'm not exact sure what it is. I think 2 %, but I could be wrong.

Is the sealed bid method the preferred sale method out west?

Yes, most of the western fur sales are sealed bid. Colorado and Arizona are open auction.

Montana tried open auction for the first 2 years they had sales and then switched to sealed bid.

In my opinion - and I've been involved with fur sales in the west for almost 40 years - in the long run, sealed bid is better for the sellers.

There are some occasions when open auction would be better - like on the really nice western cats when the market is hot. But when you factor in possums and skunks and low grade fur and everything else - sealed bid puts more money in the trappers pocket.

RTT, at OTC we would just flip a coin in the event of a tie bid. I won some and lost some.
