So why would it be that our marten population has a SUPER high percentage of critters with white feet and strange other colorings? Would it be inbreeding? The population is fairly isolated from other habitat.
This is the one from this weekend, another one I might as well try the taxi market for I am guessing.

Your marten are interbred with Kusko's lynx.
If the damage spot isn't too big, any good taxi can fix or hide it.

Fish the inbreeding would certainly be my guess. I was curious before to ask if you were trapping a place that maybe isolated. White hair and white spots can occur when inbreeding occurs.

So here is the other question, what would you ask for something like this? I have a feeling I have been selling too cheap the others with odd colorings.

I guess I would be happy with market price for good marten. Knowing that it would be graded down on fur value at the auction. I would be happy with anything over $100.
Not really sure what he taxidermy market would bare. If they sold fast before at less than you think you could get. Bring up the price until you have problems. Can always come down I guess.

I would ask $250. You would most likely get close to $100 at the auction......$75 for sure if prices hold. The small feet on a marten are a pain to skin so it has to be worth your while. Thats how I look at it anyway.

I always watch the auction prices....the top prices for wolverine is usually around $450 or so.....a good wolf can bring even more.....so why should I sell these same animals that are taxidermy quality for less. Marten are a bit different but should still be worth double.

Animals with this condition are known as "piebald", it is technically called piebaldism. It would appear to be genetic; however, recent research has shown that piebald conditions occur rather rapidly when animals are domesticated. It was originally thought that piebaldism was due to selective breeding (favoring white spots, etc.) but more recent work has shown that the condition arises on its own.

Those are really the ones that command top dollar on the taxi market. However, if priced reasonably, anything unusual has a niche in that market.
I agree the feet on marten are a pain to do for taxidermy, but if you can take what might be a $100.00 pelt and spend an hour and turn it into a $150.00 piece, I do it.
Fish, it wouldn't hurt to clean the leg up a little and try for a couple hundred bucks.

Here is mine..also caught a little one with just the front feet being white. I got an offer of 125 off of Taxi.net. It's at least an xxl if sent to auction without the feet...

A friend of mine took a large whole marten into a buyer in Fairbanks the other day. Bill Wivoda and he gave him $125. Have to command a premium before I would be prepping for taxidermy rather than the auction if it only had white feet.

I would send it whole frozen for 250, let the taxi deal with skinning it. I bet it would sell pretty quick, I've got a couple guys that are asking me for cool marten. Thaw enough to fold it into a ball, freeze, pack and ship.

For selling marten to the taxidermy market I would suggest that most taxidermists would prefer whole frozen. There are many ways of mounting them. Freeze dry ( using the whole animal but guts removed) wrapped bodies ( skinning but using the leg bones and sometimes the skull, or carving a foam one) and conventional taxidermy, skinning, turning and tanning then fitting over a foam or wrapped body, and somtimes skinning and leaving the toe bones in, but still turned to last nuckle, which gives a more realistic looking foot. ln which this method would also be nice to have a carcass for reference pourposes. All of this in a nutshell, frozen whole is preferred my most. If anybody is interested in knowing more about the process of freeze drying I own a freeze dryer and can send pics and information of the process. Always looking for oddball martens, white feet and crazy huge throat blazes.
