While in Washinton State, I recieved a small package, from a gentleman in Canada, containing a number of ultra light snares and directions of how he uses them to snare Red squirrels.

Pretty amazing how it works. I have snared a number of grey squirrels on ADC jobs but never a Red ( pine) squirrel. So I am eager to try them this winter.

Thanks Pete!

I use three guide sticks on many sets and raised clod rows on (some) hole sets.......(Man, someone needs to come visit me and bring a digital camara...) Ha! \:\)

I trapped all 3 of the red squirrels behind my house one day on ACCIDENT. I had a few colony muskrat traps stacked on a fish house out back and didn't put them upside down like I should have. So the traps were "set". No bait but apparently they are too currious for their own good and went inside. I found them a few days later dead. OOOPs. Maybe curiosity is the way to get them? Now that I think about it, there was a walnut tree directly overhead and its possible they were going into the colony traps to retrieve the walnuts. Sorry, I/ll go back to Coyote trapping, now.

So LT,are you saying not to remake the coyote set or just to make sure there is another active set outside the catch circle in addition to the catch circle remake?

nope squirrels.lol

this is what i like to do if its a good funneled location.i will make 2 sets sometimes 3 and if i catch one i will remake it the best i can like it was.but always atleast 2 sets for nontarget catches if i catch 2 i will remake them and put in a fresh set .

learned that from a good coyote trapper i dont like catching coyotes but i get them now n then in fox sets.

"let go" means your services are no longer needed or you're fired

Hi Guys,

I stumbled on a great method for getting the up reds.

Dig a small depression in the dirt with your hand-about a fistful of dirt, replace the dirt with a small amount of shelled corn. Set a 1.5 longspring or jump directly over the corn so the open jaws completely circle the little "corn pit." They try to get the corn with their head and POW-I have caught over a dozen this year by our deer corn like this. Make sure to tie the trap to a drag.

For sneaky coyote...I have been sifting dirt in a bigger pattern by worked but not snapped traps to see where they are stepping. So far, most (4 of 6) are coming from the side and stepping closer than 9 inches. They are not working the set much. If I did a better job of guiding them, I think it would work better. I was thinking of throwing a couple handfulls of small rocks on each side to help guide them.

Asa,

I made a slanted log set, the type you'd use for fisher. Found a log at a 45 with the top in a crotch of another tree, and i set up a 220 on it. snapped the little fella in two! i was after coon, but got the squirrel, maybe try this set and a 110.
