Made three coon boxes today for my 160's. Others that use these what trigger system do you use. I made a few "pans" to see how they would work and I am going to test them this season. I bent the trigger at 90 degrees on the one as you can see. You really need to put a lot of pressure on the this wire to trip the trap. I doubt a mink would trip this trigger. As far as the wooden pan goes I dont know if a coon wll just step over it or not. I am also concerned a coon will get too deep in the trap before it fires. I am going to paint these a little to camo them and add chicken wire the back part. Let me know what you think. I also left the bottom where the entrance is open and have tie wires on the side to stabilize the trap like in the Matt Jones video.

I just finished making a few this morning as well, didnt go with the pans though. I'll try it with the normal triggers and well comoflaged and see how it goes. Good work on the boxes.

Yeah, I havent put the chicken wire or mesh on the back yet. I think using the mesh rather than having a board there is a better way to do it. The coon can see the whole way through then.

Has anybody tried recessing the trap further into the box and then placing the trigger wires out instead of into the box???

Just wondering....

I made some this week in 5 gallon buckets. Bent over the wirers and put a block of wood just like the pictures. I am using 220s. It will have to be a pretty small coon not to get caught around the neck or front shoulders, as for mink It will be close. I think it lightened the trigger tention with that block of wood on there. Thats my 2$$. Axman

I forgot. In the pictures I would turn the trap around and bend the trigger wirers the other way then your block of wood will be right over the jaws. This will get your trap farther away from your bait............... Axman After lokking at the pictures again I would say not to cut your notches so deep or maybe even take the trap turn it around that way your triggers are in front of your trap then you would get a neck catch for sure, inless they would shy away with the triggers out in front.

thanks for the input. I am thinking of taking the blocks of wood off and just leaving the wire. Any input?

Here is a Coon caught in a 160 with a pan. I prefer pans on all my cubby's !

If stray dogs could be a problem you'll need about a 6" overhang to keep them out but let coons in.
As for stabilizing, you can drill a hole in the top over in a corner and drive a 2 foot stake thru.
Hope this helps

Why cover the back? Set another 160 and score a double. If I was targeting large coons I would size up to 220 if legal. Using sweet bait will help reduce chances of catching stray dogs and cats. I like sweet corn in the box and a dab of anise. Nut

Tims,I don't think you really need the wood on the triggers.I just bend the wire's into the cubby and have had no problem's.
