Thanks CKS, so you no longer offset on coyote specific sets, original or remakes? How about spacing from your attractor....back 4-6-10"?
Your first pic, reminds of a remake from Charlie Dobbins, only in sort of a half-moon shaped.
I usually convert it to a dirthole or "replant" a grass tuff, use original bed, waxed dirt.........then the final coat is from the catch circle. I know some like to mist the set, I've not that before. Cool, thanks.

no offsetting. from the hole, to the trap bed, is just a little lip there to keep the hole from falling in. the fixed jaw is about 1 inch from the hole. i need to get better pics. but this is what 95% of my sets look like, no way is this the ONLY way, its just what works for me. the hole would NORMALY be deeper, but the ground was so hard...but it was deep enough. thats a 6 inch jaw spread trap, for reference. the fixed jaw is up against the trap bed lip.

In super hard ground often times I'll dig out a little spot like this then cover with a cow pie.......or replant a patch of grass...that gives the coyote more of a direction to come in from....hole being on the downwind side.......
I've tried 25 things on super hard ground, built several things to experiment with...seems an axe or mattock works best....stuff really flies, but at least you can get some steel in the ground.

Common knowledge...I remember Mark June way back before he hooked up and got "let go" by Tom M.....What he's sayin' isn't new... maybe new to you... Yep, new to me as I'm an old guy just getting into trapping. If I knew it all, I probably wouldn't spend my time here. Thanks Ace, I remember you prefer more open yote sets. This is a good post, I hope it keeps rolling.

Charles KS: If the dirthole in picture #1 is dug as vertically as it appears in the picture, I can definitely see why crouding the hole with the trap jaw would work better at that set style. As I pointed out in an above posting, more vertical holes will have the animal standing closer to the hole to see down into it where a 45 degree angled hole would have them standing back about 9" to 10". However, with all due respect, I see nothing about that particular set that would prevent the coyote or any animal from looking into the hole from the side rather than being forced to approach from the trap side of the hole. If they were to look in from the side and not choose to work the set any further they would be on there way without stepping on the trap pan. Ace

You tell 'em Billfrank! Charles, that is why you are just a fur trapper and not a "REAL" coyote control man like Billfrank ! ( Ok, that and you have a good job...yeah, yeah, I know). My point is in control work, where you have to kill every coyote, every time.... you'd end up having some long days as you will be missin' a lot of 'yotes, son! Many times , in many area's , adult coyotes won't enter that circle, no matter what you do! That all looks good in theroy and will work on some coyotes but you'd not try that 365 on a coyote control line!....Not and catch every coyote! I want to come to Kansas...give you a head start and trap out side your catch circles....that's what I wanta do !

They are at times! Ha! Well, I suppose that you are trying to make the point that I am not a full time control trapper, either...which is true. But I do get some coyote contol jobs from time to time...when it's a family unit, 90 in the shade and some poor sap have chased them for weeks with coyote urine and some maggot covered bait down a dirthole....and I have trapped coyotes probably longer than Charlie has been alive...and in a number of states both east and west. I have learned from some of the best control men out there, so when I say something, I didn't dream it up...it comes from years of experience from the control men I learned it from and from my own experience using it in ADC work and trapping coyotes for the better part of 30 years. While I'll give Charles credit for a "neat lil' set"....there are coyotes that will circle that set once and head out! Once you have the coyote in the area, you HAVE TO catch him. Too many coyote trappers miss too many coyotes that come into the area....which was my whole point of posting the question in the 1st place.

Gary asked...how bout squirrels ?? they circle shy ??
I have been trying to trap some nuisance red squirrels with rat traps Gary and they won't touch them! Tried putting them inside a box like a weasel box, still no action. Tried several baits and camouflaging the trap, NOTHING! I sat there and watched squirrels going out around the traps so they didn't have to get near. Must be these Northern Michigan reds are smarter than educated coyotes appear in some areas. Never thought an old 'yote trapper would be skunked by a squirrel, LOL! Ace

Well LT GREY...
I am a full time control trapper...I trap sheep and goat country....grew up learning to trap cats, yotes and fox...and to TRY to get em all...Not manage em...
One thing I DO KNOW IS.....
NO ONE TYPE SET WILL CATCH ALL COYOTES...OR CATS....OR FOX for that matter...
You call Charles' set a "neat lil set" but hey it works for him in his area...maybe it doesnt for you...but just because guys dont pattern their trapping after your outline doesnt mean they arent catching....Dang, give some guys a break...

Charles knows that I am just giving him a hard time...That is a good set to know and I'll no doubt set a few that way this season just to see the effects... Don't take that I am giving a guy down the road as personal....I'm not... I actually like Charles and hear he's a pretty good trapper.

Asa, I've spent quite a bit of time trying to catch red squirrels in da U.P. in weasel box traps and found the same thing.i can catch mice and chipmunks day and night but those red squirrels won't go in them.

Thanks johnd, at least I don't feel so stupid now. It sounds rediculous but I wonder if those red squirrels somehow knew those were traps as after the traps were out a few days the squirrels disapeared. I know the remaining squirrels pull stakes many times after one shoots a few of them.
