I don't know how much my bags weigh? But I know I have to be serious about heaving them in

Like someone else mentioned, I use construction sandbags, and fill them up at or near the set.

At the end of the season I dumped all the rocks where I can find them again next year.

BaldKnobber,

I was taught to make the same type of front foot sets.

The one thing my mentor added was three or four small sticks, about as big around and half as long as a pencil, stuck into the mud just outside of the rim, so that an inch or so stuck out.

These are to brush his whiskers, and get him to lift his head, and put his paws out.

I used to use zip ties myself. They work GREAT but I kept getting home with fewer that I cut off. In other words I was loosing some of the used ones in the stream. It happens in a canoe when you cant feel your fingers.

Im not saying for a second that you loose them, but I did, and I threw enough cigarette buts out my car window in a past life, that I dont need to be leaving anymore trash behind if I can help it,. So I switched to split rings.

If I could truck trap my area I would use zip ties as well. They rank right up there with duct tape.

PS I use that much weight because most of the time Im trapping 3-4 feet of water, so I put the bag in the deepest hole, but if the beav can move it 5 feet across the bottom, its shallow enough for him to breath.

It was the first day out for thathat.
It is MUCH more respectably dirty now, and is starting to look (and smell) about right.

I pretty much quit using weighted bags and started using drowning rods because of ease of use. When I did use weight I wouldent use an ounce "under" 40 pounds. Even at that I had a 65LB beaver waiting on me one morning. That was the only time though.

I use footholds for beaver as much as possable. I fill a milk jug full of concrete with a piece of chain inside. It weighs about 25 pounds. It is the minimum I would use. They work great if your area of water has a soft or muddy bottom. The beaver cant drag it out. But if the bottom is solid rock and/or smooth, mister beaver will be waiting on the bank for you. Thats been my experiance anyway.

Yes I admit it- IM a Yotaholic
