Hi. I'm a developer and I'm working on a trapping app. Since I am making this to be used by trappers I would like to hear from you about how you would use a product like this.

If you could use your smart phone or tablet on your trap line what features would you find useful?

Here is a run-down of current features:

  • your geolocation is recorded and marked with a pin-point on a map
  • You may click a button to select animal species and record your catch numbers
  • Your catches are recorded for later retrieval and for building graphs.

Another feature I may add later is when you snap a photo of a track or scat it will tell you the species that made it.

Do you have any ideas, opinions, or comments?

Thanks

be able to mark where sets are in relation to my location would be helpful. Would be really interested in this when you put it out there. Are you making it for apple and android?

A suggestion-- if you could make a short note about a specific set (e.g, bait/lure/trap size used) at a specific location.

I'm building it for both Android and Apple.

Great ideas! Keep 'em coming.

I'd like to see maybe a drop down list of traps that could be selected for each set. Maybe a way to record time of set and time of check. Also maybe a notes section to add notes such as what triggered the set location. If I think of any others I'd really be interested in it so if you need someone for TD I'll volunteer!!

TrappingTN, I don't have an expected launch date. I use an agile workflow, which means I combine user testing with design in a recurring cycle until the product is perfected. Then it is released. I try to make it as user-friendly as possible before I deploy it. I want it not only to work, but to work well, look great, and be perfectly usable. I build it around real needs and wants of people and that's why I value your input.

Since I don't have a "launch date" I will post it here when it's ready.

Based on my experience trying to develop a similar app just on android...could take at least 2 months. Then again I hate java(eclipse IDE is not even on the same playing field as visual studio for developement and im not spending the $200 dollars+ to make one app on visual studio).

Definitely need a "notes" section to record specifics on each set... Like which bait, lure, urine, type of set etc...

I would like a "CATCH" button when I catch a critter.. Then the app will record moon phase, wind speed, wind direction, barometer, air temperature.. Etc. if it could compile all that data and graph it to look at later in the season it could really be helpful!

I think this is a great idea and I truly hopes it work. The problem that I have found with the smartphones is getting accurate GPS locations. Locally, I trap alot of small woodlots and marshes (10-30 acres) and I set out quite a few traps for that small of an area. I have yet to find a GPS program for my smartphone that is accurate enough to distinguish between sets. If you can solve that problem I'd by glad to be on your field testers list.

Set it up so you can also attach photos to a location. If you see tracks or a good location for a future set, a picture can be added to the push pin on location. Or catch photos can be added to the location.
One problem I have with trying to keep records of my trap line is the time involved in keeping notes. I have tried to record sets when I put them in. Location, type of set etc. The when I move that set or pull the set I never take the time to note what I did with the set.
Make it so pulling sets goes as fast recording them as recording putting the sets in.
I don't think I would take the tablet along with me, too much to try to keep in my hands on a water line. It is too expensive of a piece of equipment to carry in the truck or on the line. BUT I can see a smart phone or Ipod to carry. Then transfer the information to my PC at home through E-mail or Icloud.
Good idea, keep everyone updated on the progress.

I would agree with that!! Also be able to log what bait or lure or scent was used what kind of set and what kind of back drop or base was used or around!! How long was trap out before first catch, if possible log tracks found or scat and have a overview map to maybe try to figure out their pattern!!
