Anyone pick chestnuts for money? I have been hitting a few local trees planted in the 1800,s. I've picked a few hundred pounds of 1 1/2" European, but only four American nuts from five trees. I sure like the American chestnuts, even though they are small.

Ohbuyer II, It will have to wait till next year, as this year seems to be almost 100% shrivelled skins in the bur.At two different locations miles apart.Most years they produce very well, and you just fight the locals (who pick night and day it seems)for a few nuts. Three of the trees are main street Elma next to the high school, and two are in tumwater at the graveyard.

how do you tell the difference between American and European chestnuts.

please show the difference between the two. i know a guy with a tree that he claims is an american, i have filled shopping bags years ago.

There is a very large American chestnut tree on one of the properties that borders mine. Until last year, I thought it had to be blight resistant some how. But I noticed last fall that the bark has started to split and the top is dying.

It had a pretty good crop this year but I didn't save any. I planted a few in the woods at the property line as I have done in the past, but have seen no sign of any growth.

Next fall, I am going to try some in pots-if it produces again.

One of the BIG differences is size. American chestnuts are quite small compaRED to the others. And they have ALOT of hair on the shell.

When I was checking it seemed the leaves were the best way.
Looking at the way the leaf ends are formd. Hard to explain , better to Google.
I found one tree, lady at the farm told me her daddy planted it way back when he was young.
Have several different varieties around town , it seems.
This is the only one that requires some caution when collecting.
Kinda like picking up a pocupine by the rear end.
Get jabbed in a hurry.
