I bought 3 dbl bear traps in I belive the summer of 2006 and that year the law changed and we are now no longer allowed to use them. We can only set 1 foot snare too. We always had been allowed to have 2 per person set which was much better because of so many misses due to coons, small bears, coyotes and not properly placed traps. Seems like we just hanging on to this privelge by the skinn of our teeth.

Thats cool that they alow snaring them. That explains the bear sized snares they sell in the fand t catalouge. What about alaska, do even they prohibit leg hold bear traps?

I wish you could leagally use them in the backwoods of the adirondacks, I am sure there are people with huge tracks of land that still use them but you wont hear about it.

Here are some trapped bears for you. #15 Newhouse

Here is the tattoo I just got last week. The initials are Pops and Gramps. Gramp gave me this trap. He trapped many bears for the bounty back in the day. The trap is very special to me and is part of my family heritage.

You know what happens when you trap bears? You got to skin them. Sometimes four a day. Just something to think about. wink

I clean skin them probably similar to what you call clean skinned beaver. Close to good. I usually have to do some finishing work with a beaver skinning knife in the areas that need it after the first skinning.

I wish someplace would legalize them. I've got a Newhouse just begging to be used. I nearly went bear trapping 10 years ago in Maine with a relative, when the traps were still legal, but he got sick and couldn't do it. That was before I had my own trap or the funds to do it. Never got around to doing it and then they go to cables only. They really are barely holding onto bear trapping in Maine, it's a big target of the antis. I've wondered if there's any chance of Alaska legalizing them again but just snaring bears has been trouble enough up there because of antis. I don't think Maine will ever make them legal again. It's got to be exciting to come around a corner on a trail and find a bear there waiting for you!

We will never get the steel bear trap back. The crazy part is that we voluntarily gave it up when we were fighting the bear referendum. The thought was that we could better fight to keep bear baiting and cables if we gave up the steel trap. It still bothers me but maybe it was the right thing to do. We lost the steel trap but defeated the referendum.
