I'm wondering if you can dry leaves in clusters similar to the group on the right, or if each leaf needs to be separate?
Also the twig that's with the cluster on the left is about 1/8" in diameter is it ok to dry or is it too big?

I've got lots of sassafras around and I'm interested in getting started in collecting and selling.
We've got everything from saplings to big trees. Those in the photo are from a rather large tree if it helps.
Thanks!!
First time posting a picture so I'm hoping it comes through

In the last year or so they got a little bit hard on twigs being to big. 1/8th used to be ok, but I think about 1/2 of that would be safer. As far as drying the leaves. I have dried loads of leaves and I do it a couple different ways. The first way is to load leaves about 4-6 inches thick on big screens and run fans on the leaves till they start to dry a bit. I have a 10x16 building that I dried a lot of leaves in and I have had over 100 lbs of green leaves every third day going through the building. A lot depends on the humidity. In this building I have double doors that I would leave cracked open a couple inches when the fans were running in the daytime, unless of course it was raining. I stirred the leaves everyday and sometimes twice a day. You must have nice green leaves to sell them, once dried.
The second way was to spread a big tarp out or several big tarps and start them in moderate sun. Just make sure when drying that you leaves are not turning brown or getting scorched by the sun. I would take an old broom or broom handle and turn my leaves over every day. I( usually had so many leaves drying that I would start them on tarps then transfer big piles onto my screens. It takes a bit of trouble to handle the leaves, but you can make some pretty good cash picking them, especially if somebody cut down a big tree. Then it was a matter of getting a lot of leaves and working as long as you want.
I bought the leaves for several years but the buyer that bought from me got the big something or another at me and would not buy leaves or any roots from me. He got poed at me because I would not sell him Ginseng root.

I don't have an order for the leaf this year and don't know buys it. When I was buying it I paid from a dollar to 1.40 per dry lb. Depended on what year I bought it in.
The leaves are used as a seasoning and thickner in gumbo I think it is. The name for the finnished product is called File.

don wolf it is called file'. you put the sign after the "e" in french to make that "a" sound. here it is popular and it goes in ever soup. here in louisiana at my place i have trees two foot around nearly. i have an area of land that hasnt been forested in any way in over 150 years. i could get some good amounts easily. anyone know a buyer
