Tim trapper trapper T Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 77 Swampeast Missouri	I made one from a 55 gal plastic drum. Ran axle through middle-bolted big belt pulley on one side and hooked it up to a motor. Takes a little tweaking but try to get it spinning under 60 rpm. I fill mine with sawdust 1/3 full. I tumble coons whole before they are skinned for 2minutes which is how long it takes to skinn one and then just keep rotating! Skin one, grab fluffy one from tumbler and shake or brush it out, start another tumbling while you skin the one you just took out!! Works real well for me! Tim B Don't be a fol

Sanford Otte trapper S Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 261 Wakefield, NE.	I made a different tumbler this last week to try this year. I had made one out of a 55 gal. barrel but didn't have quite enough room. I'll post a couple of picture's to kind of show how it went together. I used a 1/2 hp. motor 1725 r.p.m., a 1.5" pulley on the motor to a 14" pulley on the jackshaft then a 1.5" pulley on the jackshaft to a 19" pulley on the drum which turns at about 15-16 r.p.m. I used 1 1/2" x 1/8" square tubeing that I had from a old boat trailer that I had built years ago for the frame. The ends were 3/4" ply and the cover was 1/4" underlayment. We'll see how it does this fall. I also set it up to work on a timer so I can tumble for say 15 min. and shut off.

Sanford Otte trapper S Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 261 Wakefield, NE.	On my tumbler I took a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" ply and cut it in half then I made a approx 4' circle. I then cut 8 2x4 22 1/2" long and fastened them equaly to the two circle's, then I riped the 1/4" underlayment in half makeing it 24" wide. I made my frame 5' long by 26" wide and the uprights were 30" high.

teal trapper T Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 676 Wisconsin	My tumbler is similar to the ones posted made out of plywood...however, it is split down the middle. one half is solid for tumbling and the other is screened for getting the grit out of the fur. Bought it at the NTA in MN and love it so far. There are good deals out there if you are patient. Couldn't build the one I've got for what I paid.

I don't know for sure, but think the tumblers are for cleaning the fur not drying per sey. I believe air flow is needed for drying . But I can see sawdust drying the fur somewhat. But I would think the sawdust would need changing more often if used to dry washed or very wet fur. We have met the enemy and the enemy is us!

I'm in the process of building one something like yours . Only I was going to use aluminum gutter stock for the round cover. I like your 1/4 sub flooring idea better though. Did you soak it to get it to bend without shredding , cracking ? I have access to plenty of gutter stock or even trim coil as far as that goes. Just think it would be noisier than 1/4 paneling. I like your door also. Is that the same foam tape used under truck camper top shells? And is the door curved with the same material (sub flooring) ? I would like a closer look at that. So the tumbler would be the ticket to dry the fur at the same time as cleaning it. Never to old to learn something new. We have met the enemy and the enemy is us!
