Hello, I am a 14 year old kid from Manitoba and I have decide to try a journal this year. I mainly target marten, fisher, beaver, muskrat, and coyote. I am going run 20 power snares for coyotes and 35 bodygrips for marten and fisher. Last year I caught 51 coyotes in 20 sets,as well as 4 marten and 1 fisher and 3 weasels in five sets. I also caught 111 muskrats, 1 mink, and 1 beaver.

Over the summer I have been haying on our farm and getting ready for this fall. Here are some of the boxes I have been building.

Also I am happy to report that today in the mail these three pretty certificates came from NAFA.

Scent mainly, I prefer wood over screen because of snow, I also wire my bait to the back of the box so the holes are a good place to attach wire.

Impressive numbers for a young guy. When did NAFA start giving out top lot awards for weasels? In the old days they didn't give you anything. I had 5 in the top lot one year at $12 each and got nothing.

Thank you. I have no idea when they started giving out top lot awards for weasels, but I am sure glad they do smile.

I got top lot for weasels this year at $7.00. Saw on the auction list that was REAL top lot, FOR ALL. 51 coyotes is a heck of a haul. You must be doing it right! Good job!

One morning at the Nationals one of the Manitoba NAFA employees was telling a story of some new trappers bringing fur into the NAFA depo. Mel was telling the Wisc boys of how the ages were going down and the fur bags volumes were going up. Powersnare you were the last one in the story.....and he was mighty proud telling the story of YOU.
Looking forward to your journal.
Make sure you get your hat and pin while in the depo in Winnipeg.

We can thank 2poor on this forum and his weasel threads for having TopLots for weasel... that is why they ran out of hats at the National....almost every Minn kid got one. One year they separated out 100 better skins,,,but they sold the same as the 1000 lot...go figure.

Sad part is that it didn't have any effect on the population, and all of them were taken off of three different quarters of land.

This Summer I have been preparing some of the skulls I had saved in my fur freezer (mink, marten, beaver, three wolves, and a fox). Here is a female mink that I prepared.

I will add pictures of my otter and marten skulls tonight, and the rest of the skulls when they are finished.

On your marten box, we have some BC Trappers that use that hinged lid also. The only difference is they have the lid only over the bait compartment, the rest of the top of the box is solid. The notches to hold the trap in palce are very narrow so the springs hold the trap in place, even on a vertical set box.

Very good idea indeed Power Snarer. smile

Anywhere where that is possible I have placed cages, however this is a location where that is not a risk. This was placed just outside a barn where the only other possible catch is Raccoon and I can assure you I have no problems with dead Raccoons.

Very funny that you say this cause I have placed raccoon traps where there is no chance of catching a fisher or mink and yet I still catch them. Marten an fisher will venture a long ways from trees.

The thing is, when your traps are set with in a couple feet of a livestock door on a barn that is 50 feet from the house with cattle at large. Fisher and Marten do not come into the area. They also do not like the active firearm use that is going on there on a daily basis. Empty .22 and shotgun shells throws up a sign of danger.

Plus after living around something for 14 years you get to know what comes to the house and what doesn't.
Out in the bush, that's another story.

Skunk number 8 today.

Also yesterday a baler fire got away from a farmer 3/4 of a mile north of some of our properties and made it into the dry bulrush swamps. It was pretty bad with 5 fire departments and a helicopter. We lost a quarter section of pasture land and a quarter of wild hay. Fortunately we were able to get all our cows and bales home yesterday and this morning.

It is a set I use when the bank is too steep to set crawl-outs and the water is too deep (or the bottom too soft)to set channels. it works best on a vertical bank. sometimes you find a spot naturally as was the case this time, but more often than not I make one using a shovel. (in which case leave a patch of mud/sod istead of placing a log).
The arrows show the route a beaver uses to check out the lure.

Try drilling a little hole on the top and fill with water.... a little hydro-static pressure sure build's up.

It will only take one shot then.

But I like emptying the 870, one shot is ideal on live animals, but pumpkins are best when you empty the magazine into them! LOL

Ran the line today and had this little female in a 120 box under a bridge. she had a few porcupine quills stuck in her paws and chest. I will add pictures of it later today.

Then I had a weasel in a 160 marten and fisher set with beaver for bait. One benefit I find to coni-pans is I am picking up more weasels.

Ran a few sets today and had a weasel in a 120 mink box. Then on to a few marten/fisher sets where I had the red squirrel. catching squirrels is the one thing I dislike about the panned 160s

Will probably run the 18 power snares I set yesterday for coyotes this afternoon and if i get something I will add pics.

I'm surprised the weasels and squirrels trip the pan. I wouldn't consider a weasel or squirrel a good alternative to a 100 dollar marten.
You should be able to affix the pans closer to the coni and reduce the radius of the applied weight. That would make the triggers harder to trip for lighter animals while still allowing the marten to trip the trigger.

yeah, I don't mind the weasels as much, but IO hate when red squirrels are hanging beside the set, even worse when they are half eaten. will definitely try that

Weather has been very warm here so I ran the Coyote line again today. had this coyote pup wrapped up in a Ram. This pup has had a pretty bad fall with a missing leg and a bullet hole in the hind end.

Well a run of the 10 trap marten line produced a nice little marten in a vertical set.

Also yesterday after dark I found wolf tracks within feet of a marten box. didn't think much of it because we have a few wolves running around. Today however, had 2 horizontal boxes knocked down and the strips of summer beaver fur I had hung as an attractant were ripped off of most of my sets. Seriously considering investing in a few 750's.

Well I got the rest of my marten and fisher sets out today because I had the day off. Was nice to get out on the line today. saw probably 20 squirrels a coyote and a wolf pup. Ended up getting 13 traps out in a 6 mile stretch of jack pines and spruce.

Loaded up and ready to go

dad putting up a leaning pole.

lunch break

One of my leaning poles.

This set was made at 1 pm on my way out to the line and had a marten in the set on the way home at five. talk about a fast turn around.

Nice dark marten.

Well the line produced well today, picked up a weasel where we unload the four wheelers and a juvenile male at the first set. Then the one remaining set I have on my north line snagged this huge male. From the truck it looked like a fisher hunched up in the snow.

Figured I would show you how fat some of the coyotes I catch are. the result of more food than they can eat all year long.

This is a chunk of fat ripped off the hide. it is at least a half inch thick.

once the lake fishermen start to leave their fish on the ice the coyotes will thin out considerably.
You should check with Powerview School because they have a trapping course in their school cirriculium, offered through the Model Forest program.

post fleshing knife. dull side cleans it right down to the leather and the sharp side cleans up the gristle on the head.

checked and pulled my marten line today, and will be moving them to a new location Saturday. Hadn't caught anything on this line since last Friday and figured it was time to pull. Never fails, pull my line cause its tapering out and that's the day I add 2 more marten to my total.

This marten had a white tip on its tail, thought that was pretty cool/

get the needle and tread out...on the belly line is nothing to worry about....might go down to 99 from a hundred.
If you have caught a marten in a area keep at it cause when they are moving they are following their brethren especially this year

That looks like more than a magpie did that. Something else must have ate on it first. Maybe an eagle? Magpies don't rip through fur on thicker skinned animals like that. Maybe a bunny or something, but definetly think you have problems with a bigger bird there.

Had an okay check today, ended up with 2 red squirrels, 2 weasels, a coyote in a power snare, and 2 rabbits (one was caught by the foot and pulled its foot out of snare and hopped off no worse for wear).

Because I survived I ran the shoreline and caught a weasel and another bunny. Bad pictures of the bunny but here is the weasel.

Also helped TheFurTrapper with some marten boards.

Hi power snarer, over to the east of you. Nice to see the young guys taking an interest. Really like the form . I was at the nafa due a couple weeks ago great turn out. I notice the nice loop you make .. what type snare/ wire are you using. Is it break away?

I picked up a fox coyote and a marten this week. . Not bad for cruising the roads drunken coffee. Merry christmas

The snares are made from 54 inches of 3/64 1x7 cable. The support is a length of 20 gauge wire purchased at the local hardware store. No breakaways but I have never had deer issues where a breakaway would have helped.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Nice video of power snaring,
Like what Kris said about snaring...... You remember where you hang a 20$ bill in the bush at the end of the season....especially when you have a6foot snow drift to go through on closing day.

How thick is the forest you are snaring in??...You don't try and hide you're snare at all? I've only been using power snares for about 2 years now and my forest is fairly open on a few occasions the coyotes turn around when they see my snare. So i try hiding them a bit but i feel it makes it look like too much of an obstacle for them which might also make them hesitate. Also how high above ground do you put your snare?

Most if my sets are in dense willow and the snare is blended in well. This one was set behind an oak and there was nominal cover. However I do believe this snare will kill the next coyote going down the trail. I make my loop 14 inches high and 14 inches wide.

I have big coyotes. Use what works although some of your refusals might be caused by the low loop
Mine are tremcladed white a few scratches and dings on the paint just helps break up the outline.

Manitoba trapper I think your confused. you have your snares 5inches off the ground and you think his snare is 14 inches of the ground, now if I'm correct he means his snare loop is just 14 inches in diameter

Not completely. You were right about 14" being my loop size.

With low loop wou will get more leg/gut catches which is unacceptable to me (especially in a three day check). A small stick hung on the bottom of the snare will cause them to lift their head and walk right into a loop. Last year I had a 96% neck catch rate. (2 out of fifty snared coyotes)

USE WHAT WORKS BEST ON YOUR LINE!

Had a great Christmas with the family and gorged myself on meatballs and turkey. Though I would add my gift from my parents. It's an old skidoo citation 3500. The guy they got it from rebuilt the motor, replaced the track, then got a new sled and parked it. Took it out yesterday and it is miles nicer than the Honda for winter trapping.

Hi if the sled has a twin its the 4500 I had a mirage 1 motoski it was the same as a 3500 268 single ran it for years in the 80s trapping It didn't owe me dime when i cooked it. I believe the 81 4500s had a 368 rotax often referred to as a 377 .
Powersnarer watch the carb boot between the carb and the cylinder. it is rubber and if it cracks you will lean it out and cook it .

Started the day not in the brightest spirits, my snowmobile wouldn't start. Fortunately, the trusty Honda fired up so it took it.

Here is the bike ready to go (had more boxes in the sled)

Looked like really promising area, I saw plenty of sign (as well as more deer than I saw all deer season).

Until I found this cry

blurry due to zoom but its a 120 box

so much for that area

Have had much success trapping marten in cattle pastures? I checked one out that had what I figured was a nice mix of cover. But there wasn't any sign. I know it won't be a hard and fast rule but just picken your brain. I picked up a fox and a marten this week .. long days on the lake 11 hour days . I'm not a youngin like you. All the best in the new year.TR

Don't overlook those pasture since there could be some 10 inch popular which could be old wood-pecker nest cavities in which marten are looking for night cover. Those fallen logs in pasture are small game trails that many a mouse is running under...food.
Interesting that in most other jursidiction...member of the wildlife branch or enforcement can not trap or take fur bearers, therefor no conflict of interest.

The guy who is trapping out there is not the game warden, so whoever is out there has every legal right to be there and more right than me as they were there first and a little respect towards fellow trappers goes along way in making friends and not competition. I wish him well in that area and hope he catches plenty of fur.

When the marten are moving don't forget wildlife corridors are their travel routes, and those can be pastures, and flagging of grouse wings are very effective there.
Their Christmas holidays will be over soon so you still have 2 more months.

Well for only having three boxes put along a major highway I was quite happy with today's catch.

Had a marten and squirrel, both in panned 160s. also got 4 more sets out in the 45 minutes I had after school before dark.
This marten had a shorten tail. It was healed over completely so I am assuming it lost it earlier in life.

And this is a sight to make you cry. Neighbor's dog managed to catch a marten and brought it home. By the time I got it it was slipping and valueless so unfortunately it had to be discarded.

The way the weather has been my tracks and the trails are either drifted or snowed in daily, but the coyotes know where their trails are and will follow them even when there is snow over top.

Three more coyotes, one disgusting with mange, and 2 beautiful pales, fur still looks good so gonna keep killing the calf eating coyotes.

Slowly getting enough footage to put a video together, and will hopefully get my next video up by this weekend.

I trapped that same quarter of land a few years back. Caught 35 to 40 coyotes every year due to the fact there is a packing house on the next quarter East and it was like they were going to Joe's Dinner. I would suggest that you should set your snares back in the bush and not right along the edge of the field because it can blow in bad there. I never set on the East bush as there is a dog there that likes to chase the coyotes. Keep at them and good luck!

Snares are back in 25 feet or so, just easier to mark their points on the edge. I agree about the snow, had a east wind the other day and it made for hard sledding. I do believe that dog is no longer with the farmer, as there have not been tracks all winter.

There is a little open area just south when your coming in from the north end heading East .it is Just a couple of hundred yard deep and maybe 80 or so yards wine. The coyotes coming from the south and west road sometimes cross right at the tail end and then head east to the corner.caught a few there, you might want to check it out, can't hurt! Best of luck!

Just gonna share whats been going on here, on Wednesday a gear in the lower clutch of my old citation broke, rendering that sled inoperable until I find a cheap used one. Checked kijiji, and found a beautiful vintage citation with not a scratch on it for $500. No cracks, rips or dents. so on Thursday dad went down and got it, with the agreement that I pay him back when my fur check gets here.

So on Friday we loaded it on the flat deck to haul over to where my beaver sets are (dad was hauling hay from the field so he wanted to use the flat deck). half way there the mint skidoo bounced off the trailer at highway speed, and landed hard on the pavement.
body was dented,
hood was destroyed,
handle bars were bent,
left steering arm was bent,
oil tank was punctured and the mounting bracket broke
carburetor went flying
air breather came loose.

To say we were disgusted was an understatement. So we winched it on the trailer and took it home. We unloaded it and loaded the bikes on instead. We made it a half mile before both the Yamaha front hub locked up, causing it to swerve off the trail and bury into the deep snow. We both piled on the Honda, and proceeded to drive 15 ft before getting horribly stuck. So there we sat, with two broken Skidoos, one broken bike, and one bike deep in powder snow. That was one wonderful walk back to the truck!

That night we looked at the road kill Skidoo, and figured out what all we needed to do to get it running. After a few hours that night, and a couple more in the morning, we had a running skidoo, dad looked after the steering arm and carb, and I straighten crumpled metal and machined a few new parts. It was hoodless, and dented, but she ran. with that in mind me, dad, and my brother set out to rescue the bikes.using the skidoo, shovels, and plenty of swear words we managed to rescue the Honda.

Then our attention turned to the yamaha, we used the skidoo to tow it back on to the trail and then limped it out, as we loaded it on the trailer it sprung a major fuel leak, emptying the tank in half an hour.

So that's where I am at right now, the worst part is no beaver were harmed in the making of this update.

That is crazy compared to what they want to pay around here. $ 20-$25 all you get around here at auctions. Just how much these Yotes weigh that you are getting there? This year the 4 I got the heaviest so far is around 37 lbs. Which is average. But I have caught them over 50 lbs.

Arrived home today, and have to say that although an interesting experience, the AGM was lacking in comparison to years past. I found the lack of youth participation disappointing, with the majority of kids being from the southern part of the province. There was probably 70 people there and maybe 10 kids. I did enjoy talking to both Dave and Roger about fur prices, and cannot wait to start spring rat trapping.
TheFurTrapper and I did a presentation on funnel trap building, and he has the video linked in his latest journal post. the plan was for each kid to get a trap, but unfortunetly that only resulted in four traps being sent home with kids. The rest went to interested adults who should put them to good use.
Live auction went well, we bid up a survival suit, snowshoes, and a really good axe, but were outbid. I ended up being highest bidder on a dozen 120 belilse, and they will be put to use on the marten line next year.

Then on to the banquet. Our family sat with an elder from Pukitawagon, and I enjoyed hearing his stories of remote living and trapping.

Then it was pelt handling results time, I placed third in some other categories, and much to my delight managed a first place prize for marten handling.

And the best part of the night, my little brother winning the squirrel competition . He just recently got his license, and I managed to scrounge together three squirrels for him to do up. The look on his face was priceless, and ALMOST stop me from hitting him on the shoulder when he turned to me and said, "haha I beat you."
We took his winning over to MTA trap sales, and bought him a Caribou skinning knife. I used some of mine on a ram 2 for lynx next year.
Was definitely an interesting AGM, and can't wait till next year. My goal is to win muskrat, squirrel, and beaver next year, so I have a plaque from every event before I am too old for the youth competition.

I have used the wolf masters upside down quite a few time and it worked great. I thought the would trigger easier but I don't think it is an isue anyway. I agree on your high loop also, I get lots of yotes in my wolf snares even a couple foxes this year.
You probibly read my post on your buddies thread. Same goes to you. You 2 seem like a couple great young men and your parents should be proud of your drive and ethics. Keep up the good work.
Have you ever tried to attach your muskrat funnells on a float so they stay just below the surface in spring when water levels change fast. This might just cause them to go under or around but curious to know if it has been tried.

Looks good and clean to me too. What kind of fleshing knife you using? Nice clean up around the face also. Show a video of how you flesh with the knife. All those Yotes you get, and with school you probably don't have a lot of time to do them. Do you beam and flesh your Yotes too? YOu must not play sports because you wouldn't have time to do it all. Hard working young man to trap that many animals. YOu must have had a good mentor to know that much about trapping already. Good job.

Its hard to believe your season for Marten goes this long. Our Fisher and Marten season closed here in December. We are just starting to get Marten close by in neighboring towns from me, in the thicker woods where there aren't many houses. Haven't seen any here yet. Good luck. Storming here now, son thinks they might get a snow day to use their last one up. 6-9" predicted for tomorrow, then more lake effect on Wednesday. We haven't had any real accumulating snow all winter. We only have around 8" now. We haven't had anymore than 20" at one time this year. We usually have 3-4' average every winter. Last winter we didn't have much either. Love it. This year we keep getting snow but it gets rained off. Just enough to cover tracks for snaring, been nice.

Good point. I have used mine from hunting geese to having it for backup hunting bears.

Exactly my point, it's a gun that is powerful enough for anything I deal with, but can also be used for rabbits and grouse.

I like to shoot pigeons and blackbirds with mine too. Gets me practiced up for geese and upland in the fall. I like to make a trip to my grandpa's farm in late May or early June. The black birds will be nesting in his spruce trees. Its not uncommon to shoot a 100 in a day.

Looks like a small barrel on my computer, thought it should be bigger though. 12 gauge is a good all around gun . I have a 12 gauge Remington 870 pump. I didn't see where you mentioned shooting geese on the post.

Been busy here, I've been working for the local hardware store, and helping calve out our angus cattle. Over the past three days I have been working in my latest project, a .22 cal. trapline rifle. I have an excellent 22, an old ACE #1 that my father handed down to me when I was 7. The problem is that this little gun was facing too much abuse bouncing down my trails, and I didn't like to take it with me. So anyways, I was digging through a box of Mis. shoot supplies looking for the cleaning rod for my 243 and found a .22 barrel. This barrel was ugly, with the bolt rusted in, and a finish that was created with a can of tremclad. On a whim I soaked it in penetrating oil, and the next day was able to get the bolt out of the gun. Believe it or not the inside of the bore was spotkess, and looks brand new with really good rifling. I added more penetrating oil and left it till the next day.

Next I looked at the painted barrel, and a quick google search told me nail polish remover will clean it up without damaging the metal. So long story short my sister is mad, her bottle of nail polish remover is empty, and the barrel is paint free. Some WD40 and brakeklean took the rust off and left it shining. Turns out under all that paint was a decent barrel, and to my great supply the barrel was in fact another ACE #1

Now time for the stock. When dad bought the gun for a dollar at a farm auction, it had a terrible homemade stock, which he turned into firewood because it was crap. At first I considers make a stock in woodshop, but instead decided to call the local gunsmith and see what he had for a gunstock. I called and he said he had not only one stock, but a whole box full. So today I went down and got a beautiful stock. A few seconds with the drill and I had a well fitted stock. Now I just have to blue the barrel and she will be done.

Test fired it this afternoon, and to my surprise put three 22 shorts in a 4 inch circle at 60 yards.

My iPod isn't uploading pictures right now, so I'll try and add pics tomorrow.

The head space between the 22 shot and the rifling is too much to make the shorts accurate. Try using some 22 Targets and you will be down to 1/2 inch groups. If you are coming down to NAFA, I could leave you some to try.

Thanks, but i have a brick of targets sitting in my gun safe. Ran some targets through today, and tightened up to a two inch group.

Here is my barrel after paint removal

And the gun all together

That rifle looks quite similar to a Springfield Meteor.
