Hey Everyone. I am almost done making a custom Coon Trappers Knife that I was thinking of taking to market.. Not too sure though..

It is small drop point made from 440C Stainless and will have a tail stripper built right in made from Solid Aluminium...

Wondering what everyone's thoughts are about this? Would you be interested in purchasing something like this knife? What would you pay for it?

I will be posting some photos and videos of it in use over the next week or so...

Thanks Guys and Gals..

P.S. I would like to send 2 out for free to avid coon trappers to try out and give me their feedback...

Sounds like a great idea to me. If I wasn't such an amateur I'd want to be a tester. It sounds like something I would like to have but would be too cheap to buy since I already have knives and a tail stripper. If I was in the market for a knife anyway I would buy it as long as the price was similar to other knives.

My suggestion would be a harder carbon steel that well stay sharper longer! Also I trap a lot of coons here in Texas and would test the knife out for you and post a report on it on this site or one of your liking if you picked me for your tester!

How is the tail stripper mounted? I would think if it was part of the handle it would pinch as u were using it. Also how light weight is it? My favorite knife is not much bigger than a paring knife.

Also you might try a pass the knife type game. Not sure how well it would work. Set up some kinda of roster and let t-man members pass it around

I like that idea Deercreek. I hope to have the first batch of 5 done this coming weekend... As soon as they are I will post photos and see what you all think.. Thing I like about 440c is it won't rust. I could use D2 tool steel that holds a great edge but also cost more... Trying to keep the price reasonable for everyone...

Doesn't pinch either. You'll see what I mean when it's done..... Going to have choice for handles as well... G10, Burl, etc????

You would not have to worry about rust coons are the oiliest animals out there and a good sharp knife goes a long way when you don't have time to stop and resharpen all the time as it gets dull! A good sharp blade will sell more knives for you!

I know I won't be interested in a stainless steel blade.

Good carbon steel is just plain better all the way around.

Sharpens easier and ten times better at holding an edge !

Case XX were great knives until they went to stainless.

Same with a BUCK knife, got a few as gifts, and only use them if I have to.

JMHO

There are more out there that don't know how to sharpen knives than those that do.

Ok. Thanks for the input guys... I have some good 104 high carbon I will use as well. I guess more options the better...

Maybe try some strong tool steel and well....

What do you guys like for handles???

I would love to get a look at one. I have been searching for "the perfect" skinning knife. I also like the carbon over stainless.

Bet there are a few guys from Iowa that could give a coon knife a workout.

hey i designed a knife for this. i made mine of an old trap spring that i tweaked the temper on. i made it drop point with a convex edge and i buit the tail stripper into the spine of the blade. in an "L" shaped fashion.similar to some of the older wre breaking notches on military knives. it worked ok. but a stripper in the pommel of the knife would bee more convenient if you kept the handle design simple. it would need to be able to turn around comfortably. you might solve that problem by putting a pinky and index finger groove and a deep belly for the middle and ring finger, so it would work both ways.when i sell knives people like the idea of it being made from a trap spring.

on the handle i would saw maybe burlwood and leather inlay. g10 is way to slippery in my opinion. i have been cut before on a wet knife when the g10 hanle slid back. it isnt pretty. remember that you only want the coos blood on the knife. haha. also you may think about a bottle opener just for kicks
