I have never dug any roots but I'm very interested in it. I'm from north east Iowa and its almost all flat land around here. I have lots of river bottom i could look for plants in. I have tried to find info on yellow root and black cohosh* on the internet but am having trouble.

But what I'm really curious of is in my are what roots could I look for and what time of year do they appear?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know anything about iowa, but try contacting local furbuyers, many also buy roots and may be able to offer some help. Cohosh and yellowroot(goldenseal) will be found in wooded areas

you may have quite a bit of stuff there......you will almost certainly have black indian hemp, blackroot, new jersey tea, sassafrass and poke, cranesbill ,bloodroot, yellowroot{goldenseal} and ginseng.

the black indian hemp grows along roadsides.......and blackroot and new jersey tea prefers prairie types of habitats.

cranesbill, bloodroot, goldenseal and seng prefer rich woods.........you won't find them around woods that are predominatly oak.

Thanks for the info foxkidd44 are there any specific land marks I should look for when looking for any of these roots? Such as what type of trees or things should I look for?

Young gun, go back and look at some of foxkidd44s previous posts,he has posted some very good pics and info on many roots. For whatever reason I find gensieng in wooded areas that supports the growth of black walnut, much of which has been logged out.
