1st year useing disposable stakes. MB550, Bridger #2, Duke 1.5 trapping coons to coyotes. what are some ways you attach trap to stakes. I was thinking "J" hook from end of MB crunch proof to stake. Is that alright. Any other ways you attach them.
Thanks
Todd

Do you attach prior to going out or at the site?

I use a quick connect link and tighten them down with pliers. This way I can quickly change out a trap if need be or remove the trap and come back later to dig out the disposable stake when the ground thaws.

Make your end loop just big enough to go over the trap. Slip the loop through the end swivel then around and over the trap and pull tight. No need for a quick link.

I think quick links are the way to go.

Yup, Quick links are fast and dependable. Use the 3/16" size.

I would think it would be a big loop and not lay flat enough for me.

I agree with Charlie, 3/16 and they only need to be hand tight.

if you are going to use quick links it makes it that much easier for the next guy to steal your trap

X2 at 42 dollars per 100 vs 12 dollars per 100 for j hooks plus j hooks are more theft proof

I'd bet I could 'pinch' one of your traps quicker than either of you could 'pinch' one of mine. Just sayin. grin

This is the most economical way of doing it. If your concerened about the loop, drive it a little deeper so the loop is under the ground, then it wont be in your way?

I run 12" cable with 6" of chain then attach my trap with its chain and swivels.

I like the 6" of chain to either be in the ground or above, as it gives more room to play with in different ground.

Many times I only need 12" of cable in the ground and then chain lays flat.

If I had to drive 12" of cable,6" of chain and then drive the loop in ,I would have 20 some inches of cable and chain in the ground.

I'am not worried about a 30 to 50 cent link,or what ever I use.

Not for me anyway.

I have tried both quick links and J-hooks to the end swivel. The quick link is, to me, the better method. My problems didn't arise at the trap site but more in the bed of the truck.

I don't like wrestling with J-hooks at the set site so I net attached all the cable stakes to the traps ahead of time. What a mess!! After two days of sliding and shifting in the back of the truck I had a tangle that looked like a plate of spagetti.

The flaw in the quick links has already been revealed. I had 2 of 4 traps stolen from the same farm. The only reason I didnt have the other two stole was because they were cross staked with 36" stakes. (way over staked for that soil). That much work was more than the lazy farm hands from the neighboring farm could handle.
