I think true gimmicks don't last that long, especially these days with the internet.Something that is junk or a real gimmick just aren't going to survive that long.I am sure years ago it was easier to get away with.I remember an older guy I grew up around talked about sending away once for a list of "secret" beaver sets for a few dollars and a stamp. He got a piece of paper with handwritten instructions and poorly drawn diagrams for a castor mound set and a dam break type set.LOL He never sent away for anymore secrets...LOL

Anything that makes catching an animal more complicated than it needs to be.

I must say that I have read this thread with interest because I am currently developing my own trapping product. I hope it never makes it on this thread! Anyhow, I promise it will dramatically increase your catch of any species by at least 3X. It also cures cancer, reverses baldness and makes you more attractive to the ladies. LOL! Seriously though, I hope to test it this coming trapping season and if all goes well, they should be for sale by next year's trapping season.

I also think that trappers are not willing to spend as much money on gadgets as are other sportsman, which is why I don't plan to make much money.

I was just being a little sarcastic. Many years ago I bought about a half dozen #4 jumps, I thought I'd try something new. I set them all at castor mounds along the Yakima river (over a few years up to that point in time I had caught a few hundered beaver along that river). A couple of days later everyone of them had been sprung by beavers. Everyone of those traps went in to a deep hole in the river that day. Maybe they'll make an archaeologist happy someday.

I'm not sure if they were a gimmick or not because I never bought them but back in the 80's Ray Petrunich was pushing Grub Stakes and I never see them anymore. It's kind of funny to go through old trapping magazines and see stuff from back then that was supposed to be so great and now they're gone. I remember in archery when overdraws with short arrows were all the rage.

I've never used them, but I thought the little rubber crayfish you clip to a trap pan were a gimmick. Anybody ever use them....successful?

Anything advertised with the words always or never in them,a sure sign of a scam or gimmick.

Yep, they do work. Haven't used them lately, but they have their place.

If an idea doesn't work on your trapline, is it a gimmick? Maybe it's something that would work great somewhere else.

I've never found any use for rat floats, for example, but some people apparently slay the rats with them.

Johnny-come-lately lure and bait makers. Saw it during the 70's boom and seeing it today. Most of those 70's boomers are no longer in the business. Not to step on any toes, if you're name is johnny, everyone has to start somewhere. Let's be honest though. You write up a dynamic set of product descriptions, spend an afternoon building a simple web site....then set your prices at the top of price spectrum? Come on, guys like Lennon,Dobbins,Grimshaw,Jameson,Blackies,OGorman, etc spent decades, sometimes many decades developing their skills, their products and their reputations...you price your products on the same level as theirs, then wonder why you can't sell them? When I finally closed up my taxidermy shop, I was one of the more expensive guys around, BUT, it took me 25 years to get there. Just saying.

Herters went bankrupt. Ordered some of their traps back in the early 1980's and never received them. Lost a few bucks out of it.
