I find them useful for storing bulk chain, when I get my chain, I clean it and then feed it into a clean milk jug that way I have the jugs setting on the shelf above my bench and when I need a section of chain I don't have to fumble with a rats nest of chain. I can just pull out a length and cut off how much I need. I have another setting on the bench with the top cut out of that I drop scrap pieces into that helps keep the mess off the bench and floor. I use one of the 24 ounce water bottles in the truck to store string in, just make a hole in the top, stuff the cord in the bottle thread through the top, put the top on and tie a knot in the end of the cord, once again pull out what you need, cut it off, retie your knot and you are good to go it keeps it clean and untangled. I also keep some frozen to through in the cooler, costs less than bag ice, is less messy, and if they are in your freezer and the power goes off, it makes your freezer hold that much longer.

If you add salt to the water and then freeze it, it will keep cold a lot longer.
Takes longer to freeze , but in a cooler it will be colder than any plain frozen water.
