Trader Steve- I have a 45/70 and alot of family and friends have em'. My dad has a Marlin .444 and he loves it with his scout scope. I do believe the .444 is more verastile balistically though. But either or would do what a guy needs it to do up here. I know i really like my 45-70 for out in the thick woods. I use hornady ammo and rem core lokt in mine and it always did well.

I have a 45-70 marlin 1895 guide gun. I had wild west do some work to it and they rechambered it to a .457 WWG magnum. I can still shoot 45-70 out of and 410 if I load it like a single shot. With the 45-70 loads im shooting a speer 400gr soft point at 1822fps. With the .457 im shooting a 350gr swift A-Frame at 2200fps. Either one I feel would be good black bear, moose, caribou at close range killer. Most everyone that I know uses either the 45-70 or the 450 marlin. For some reason (atleast with the rift raft that I know) the 444 is not the popular.

I've used the 45-70 and the marlin guide gun is fairly popular here in 45-70, don't see the 444 used much but it would do just fine for bear, moose, and caribou within 200 yds if it's scoped.

I have both the 444 and the 45/70 marlin. Love them both. Have killed big bad bears with both. If I had to choose one..... it would be tough but would go with the 444. yukontrapper is right IMO the 444 is a bit more versatile.

I haven't gotten into reloading yet, but maybe down the road i will. My dad and a buddy makes alot of our loads. I am unsure of what powder they use. I wouldn't mind getting a newer guide gun or .444 marlin thats stainless laminate. Maybe next year i'll look into it. Most likely get the .444 marlin. I have 460 hard cast in my 45/70 loads. I switched to hard cast ammo in all my bear guns. Not to change the subject but i really like my 870 slug gun. Killed a monster 7' black last summer with it.

Reason being, with the 870 is most guys who grew up in the village are always out bird hunting. Like i was born with an 870 :-) My favored .44 round was 305 Corbon's but since switched to the Alaska Back Packer Rounds 320 Grain Hard Cast.
We were out spring hunting Griz last spring and noticed a buddy had a Nice Hawkeye .375 been wanting to get one since then. But far and most common rifles in my parts is the good ole 30.06 rifles. Since i was in High School my dad got me a 300 H&H so thats all i use during Moose season.

I cast my own bullets and handload for everything I shoot. I do like H322 in the 45/70. Another good powder is Reloader 7. I shoot 300 grain hard cast bullets in both my 44 magnum rifle and my 444.

The 300 grain cast bullets work great in the 444. Its an older gun with the micro groove barrel and it shoots them very well. My 44 mag. is a new Winchester 92.....most 44 magnum rifles will shoot cast better if they are sized at .432 instead of .429....... sizing dies in this size are a custom option..... I just got mine from Lee.... will let you know how it works. The bullets from Beartooth are hammers in 44 mag.

I have shot 500 grn hornadys thru mine but found the recoil to stiff for me! I have a ton of Lee molds and like them. The best all-around bullet for the 45/70 is IMO a 350 grain slug. Hornady round nose are great bullets that shoot very well. Even though I use mainly cast loads I always have the Hornadys on hand.

Trader Steve- About 500 people. I must say wow indeed. Some vast knowledge here on reloading. My buddy made me some 460 grain hard cast. I've yet to shoot it. I watched him and my dad testing it. Impressive. A buddy shot a Griz in his camp last year with 550 grain hard cast (45-70) and sent it to the pearly Gates. Intruded his camp a few times. I know my dad was impressed with the Hornady load in his .444 i believe it was 320's. What is the prefered scopes for your lever guns? For a hundred yard zero.

yukontrapper, low powers 2.5 or 4power.your not shooting target or long range, low power is on target faster.an lighter where i live very brushy thats where big bucks stay.i have ben reloading since i was 12,just got my son a model 78 223.remington just old 700 with a cheap stock ben adjusting trigger.and cleaning it my it is a mess.i will be loading 52gr HPs for him,he a coyote getn machine.!i reload about 35 different calibers.at this point.i never buy factory ammo when purchase a new gun or caliber.just brass and dies.i just built myself a 220 swift on remington 700 action an douglas custom stainless barrel.and it is a shooter.do you do any varmint hunting up there thats are winter past time here.

Trader Steve-I My dad has a leupold scout scope on his 444. Unsure what power. I saw a Pre-64 winchester 06' the other day. Thinking about throwing some trades at the guy. Not a shining Gem, but gonna need some work. I have a Mohawk Rem 600 .243 awaiting my Lad. On another note a guy offered me a stainless mini-14 the otherday. But gonna have to wait. I have the K-mini already. Very cool with the Remmy's ya working on. I have a 721 remington 300 h&h. Love that ole Iron.
Varmit hunting- After reading some posts last spring i want to give it a try this winter. I bought over whites, fox pro and a Hawkeye stainless .223. But jus finding the time from work is going to be a challenge. I been looking at Storm Kloth II fleece overwhites. Anybody use them?

Yukontrapper,DAD has old remington 721 or 722 chambered in 244rem which is a 6mm unlike the 243.u can not shoot bullets heavier than 90gr.because of twist.the two main actions i build on are rem700 an win70. i have pre64 300 win mag my grand father left me.it is awesome rifle get every pre64 u can. my personal favorite varmint rifle is my 17rem Bdl.i also built a 700,22-250 with stainless shilen bull barrel.the douglas 220swift will out shoot it. i had a 222 mohawk.an traded it off.like an idot,if i would knew what i do now id kept.several guns ive traded off.but that is how i afforded to shoot competion by wheeling and dealing.had small shop for a while.the scout scopes are awesome.leuplod, burris are my main scopes.have a few older weavers, and redfields.as to varmint hunting, mix up your sounds alot,do not over call an area.i have johnny stewart i have had over 20yrs.the pleading chicken works very well here and the woodpecker.we do not get much snow.i have old white an brown camo coveralls work well when needed.the WOLF is what i want to get or catch the most.and will not happen till we move up north.
