Hey snake guys, I thought rattle snakes were born in august? My wife killed this one under our porch. She squashed it with her boot. I grabbed it and the little feller reached around and his cute little fangs came out and tried to insert them into my glove. It was about 6 inches long

Yep I believe your correct sir! My wife says she don't feel better about it lol! Looks like I need to be a little smarter with my snake ID. (I'm from northern wisconsin. not many snakes there)
So is it early for these things?

It is a little early right now. Most seem to be birthed in August and September around here. Since the one you found is only about six inches long, it is quite possible that more will be found in the vicinity. You might want to set a couple snake traps- http://www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/1987865/Snake_cahaba_snake_trap#Post1987865

I can’t find a good “Snakes of Tennessee” web site.
http://www.tennsnakes.org Site is under construction, however it does contain a listing of Tennessee snakes. Pictures and information about each species can be found in the following links.

staple a large glue board on a piece of pre cut luan or plywood then make a cardboard hood about 2" high over the whole thing to reduce particulate and reduce anything else from making access to the set up.

You can download a free app if you have a smart phone. It's called the "poisonous snake identifier". Not perfect but it's a start. The Copperheads in my area start birthing in late August through September.

We have had early births of bats and some snake species already this season as to our experience. Climatic conditions no doubt may have contributed to such events.

Paul, that is definitely a copperhead. One of them little fellers struck me on the shoe last summer. He was in my shop and I didn't see him till he struck. He was about 4 feet from my kizer blade when he struck me. He didn't fare too well.

I just took a walk around the yard lookin for anymore. Nada! We moved right in the smokys. We are about a half mile from the park line. It's to be expected to have these lil rascals around here. We have chickens and we seen them stomp a little corn snake the other day. Maybe they shy from the lil copper heads.

I agree that the funky weather pattern has made a difference in the mating and birthing times for wildlife in my area. I have not seen near the snakes that I usually do for this time of year - not even on the road. I did talk to a friend near Branson and he said the armadillos, scorpions and ticks are the worse he has seen in years.

No doubt we are all beginning to experience a dramatic change in our overall environmental conditions. This utimately will impact and influence all wildlife and insect behavior along with brood, mating and hatch time frames. Re writing the books so to speak in the years to come.

I went a few links over from this post above into what I believe is an archived discussion about snake traps. A site was referred for the snake traps they make and he was using bobcat urine to keep snakes out. Now how does that work? Has anyone found a deterrent that works? I've performed tests (commercial products like Dr. Ts) with a few using eastern diamondbacks, cottonmouths and a few black racers kept at a preserve. Seemed to be very ineffective. There are also a few on youtube testing the same thing. Any opinions?

I do not know of any truly effective venomous snake repellents of any type, commercial or homemade that I would sell or service wan account with for a fee expecting a positive result.I dont see how these products can even be sold and billed to be effective.

Ahh thanks Ron! I was searching for snake deterrent with no luck. I like the funnel traps. No messing with glue boards.
