Questions on live market including transfer from trap to cage? Cage and pen setups? Time periods and care involved? In general any problems to expect or pointers? Coyote and fox.

PM may be the best forum to respond.

Thanks.

Most here don't care much for the live market.

Give me a PM about the live market and I will try to answer your questions been doing it for some time now. As for the comment that most here don't care for it, sounds to me like you know very little about it. If it is legal in your state do it. But when one trapper starts cutting another one down for what he is doing legally the whole sport is doomed.

or too much....

Doing it down here, PREVENTS a state wide fox season.

Some don't care, some do, and some don't even know about the political shenanigans going on.

Traprjohn: I have no clue what is going on in your state with the live market. The point of my comment was if one trapper puts down another trapper for something he is doing legally it will not be long before neither one will be able to trap.

I personally don't like the idea of penning up a wild animal then throw into a pen with a pack of dogs that rip it to pieces.

Most pens that I sell to do not want the coyotes caught by the dogs due to it cost them money to replace the coyote. If you bring a dog that is known to catch the coyotes they will not let you run him. I know that some coyotes get caught by dogs but what you hear in the media is BS. With the shots that the coyotes get for infection and parasites before they are released and how good they are fed in the pens, they live better in the pens than out.

My family ran a pen for probably 20 years and in all that time there were probably less than 10 or 15 foxes caught by the dogs. The fence has been down in places for the last five or so years and the foxes won't leave. They are still fed weekly and are much healthier than any you will catch around here. A few guys still run them and they will leave if being chased but within a day or two they come right back.
Out of 20 or 30 coyotes they kill on each hunt there may be 1 or 2 coyotes that arnt in perfect shape minus a bullet hole.
This is a first for me.......coyotes being shot inside the pens.........hmmmm.

I've been dealing with pens over all of South GA for over 30 years and have never heard of the houndsmen doing this.

Maybe this is the new "fad."

That is the first I've heard of that.

Not doubting you, it's just that I have not heard of that b4.

That is the first I've heard of actually hunting and shooting coyote in a pen also, but it does not surprise me since people do pay for canned hunts. I am a member of the PA Fox & Coyote Hunters Assoc. and the coyotes are run for training and field trials around here. There are only two pens near me, and neither allows kill-hounds. If you bring them you will eventually get the boot. Most fellas have expensive hounds that they trial and show, so they don't want hounds that are shredded up from fighting anyway. They give all the coyotes shots and they are well fed. I own little hounds and don't run coyote but am a member of their organization along with several other hound organizations and the PTA. It is not wise to badmouth or make blanket statements about fellow outdoorsmen, especially on internet forums.
