I've never done it, but this year I'm going to the water to try and pick up more coons so I thought I would try it based on what I've read here. I'm also going to use a lot of PVC sets. How do you present the trap and did you have any luck? Thanks.

I take the foil and rap it a round the pan and set them in shallow creeks or where tracks leed up the bank and just kinda setal it down in the mud so the shine of the pan glisons like a minow

I'd be cautious of using them in areas that have a lot of people.

Just like the coons, shiny stuff attracts attention of people...

Might cost you a few traps.

Back when I was starting out that was one of the sets we heard about. Back then the only foil was in a pack of smokes so we had to save it up from our folks.
Shiny side up and set where the trap was always exposed to the sky for light.

You need the prismatic effect of the crinkled up foil to get a 'sparkly' reflection. Good way to catch a lot of wading birds too. Just a gimick that went out of fashion with the 'horseshoe nail' set.

Two seasons ago I caught 4 coons in the run behind my house with foil sets.I use them there to avoid the feral cats.I keep a roll of that 2" foil tape in my pack basket for such sets.just tear a length off, peel off the backing and wrap around the pan.Stuff sticks great and can be used on the same traps yearly.

I used it for years, always accounted for over half of my total catch. Never caught a non-target and, like some one posted above, really liked it when cats or dogs were in the area instead of using baited sets.

No disrespect intended to anyone here. I'm just wondering if someone can show us a pile of coon caught off this set. I can understand the use for areas like stated where you are avoiding a cat or dog and don't want to bait. Just wondering what kind of catches were talking. 5 or 10 a season or 200? I have my doubts that this is a high producer. I can see tripped traps from this set. To each his own, I just think there are more productive sets.

There are plenty of spots in meigs certainly for that kind of set but there are a lot better ways to catch a coon.

Can't agree about tripped traps. If you think about it, it's one of the few sets where the "bait" is not only the attractor but also where you want the coon to step.

The tripped traps come from the coon trying to grab the pan instead of stepping on it. That's one of reasons against this set.

I would agree with that Sniper. Most of the tripped trap problems I have with coon are in a spot where I know the trap wasn't bedded as good as it should have been or the bottom was too hard to cover the chain. I believe it comes from the coon playing with the trap in those instances. I believe the same to be true about the tinfoil set. I'd rather they not know my trap is there until it is on their foot.

Have any of you posting about tripped traps ever USED this set? My best year was probably some where around 40- 50 without even one miss.
