I was planning on building some cable stakes and seen that the tool to crimp the double ferrules was $150. What are you guys using to crimp your double ferrules that will hold up on cable stakes. And whats your favorite disposable stake?

You can buy a crimper at Lowes for less than $30 that will swage aluminum ferrules. It will swage double ferrules as well as single ferrules. On single ferrules I use the next size smaller slot.

If you are just doing a few or are short on funds, just use a hammer!

I bought one of the 25 dollar crimpers at home depot. I have had 7x7 7/32 cable break when I was pulling my stakes but I have not had a ferrule pull loose as of yet. I am using Wolf Fang anchors and they have served me well so far.

I have a large bench crimper I never use. On all the cable products I use and sell--I use a 2 pound hammer. So I have hammered tens of thousands of double ferrules and stops.
I will use the commercial crimper, when I am unable to swing A hammer.

I use a dull cold chisel on the center line to close them around the cable. Looks a lot nicer and I think gives a better grip on a larger % of the wire diameter.

I hammer them and then cross punch with a screw diver for extra security.

I use a hammer too,I have a swager but never use it cause it is quicker to set up a bunch of stakes or whatever I happen to be making then just go through them with a hammer. If you use a hammer you don't have to go nuts, you can over flatten them and actually end up cutting through the cable and weakening it.I have switched all my disposables to Wolf Fangs, they are priced right and tough as nails and work well in a variety of soil conditions.I want to cry when I think of the time and money I wasted on Berks and pogos. No offense intended to anyone but for me that is the truth of the matter...

hammer here too...

started using ferrules on my shark fishing leaders...the ferrules i used were big copper ones and needed a big expensive pair of crimpers to close them....the redneck in me said "oh i will just hammer them shut!" it worked....

then started trapping...stuck with the hammer..

like was said, careful not to go nuts and smash it completely flat...can cut the cable and that'd be bad...

on my shark leaders, i learned to crimp weed eater line (part of my leader)..took a little practice not to smash them too much...never had a leader fail or break...i could very likely use the leaders to pull a car down the road...

Weed eater line for shark leader.
genious lol.
I'd think they would bite it off, but I have about as much experience with sharks as I di kangaroos.

What do you guys use for a single cable stop? Do nuts need to be anealed?

I use 2 annealed nuts on the end of 5/64 1x19 cable and 1 aluminum stop on the end of 3/32 7x7 cable. Do the nuts have to be annealed? I heard guys using regular steel nuts so I guess not but I haven't tried it.

They clain an un-annealed nut will cut the cable wire from the threads on the nut.Do not know if it is true but I ain't gonna try it to find out. Furrels are cheap.
