What do you like for a grouse gun, I had the firing pin engagement plate break on my grandpas old h&r and the way the things are built it is a pain to tear down so it's going to be a wall hanger now. I was thinking about a stoeger coach gun in .410 I also have a bunch of .22's but I notice if you hit the breast with a 22 "as much as i try to avoid it" it will often push feathers into the meat, not a big deal as long as you clean the would canal well. Just curious what you like to use.

Head shots or base of neck (if you can, I'm hit or miss) with 22s, wing shoot them in the air with my 20 gauge. I wanted a .410, but they're kind of spendy for ammo and I'm more likely to hit them and any incidental waterfowl with a 20 gauge. On my long list of guns to buy is the 22 mag/20 gauge combo, whenever I get one it may replace my Henry 22 mag on the snow machine, but I'll burn that bridge when I get to it.

I love my take down Savage .22/.410 over and under. Great gun for grouse and the trapline.

Try a .177 pellet gun, one of the newer model types that use a single spring/barrel break. They will push the pellet in excess of 700 FPS and it will kill the bird with no problem. Plus it is quiet so you can pick off any other birds in the immediate vicinity without the whole flock spooking. Works so good it is almost like cheating.

I use maverick 12 ga and my brother is using a 20 ga. We use it both for grouse ptarmigan ducks and it works perfect I find. Also shot lots of grouse and rabbits with .177 Cal pellet gun

Just my own preference, but I'd rather have one 22 bullet hole that passes on through than to have 5 or 6 shotgun holes, with the BB still in the meat. With a scope on a 22 most of the time they are close enough to do head shot's consistently, and with no meat damage.

Yea that is fun, I have also blown through a lot of money in arrows shooting "at" grouse, turns out they will keep going after you hit them with a broad head, those new turkey razor heads would be pretty neat too.
And I can definatley understand your point of view on the subject spek.

I'll put a .22 through their head every time. Saves time and chipped teeth I'll put a .22 through their head 10% of the time. Going to the supermarket is still cheaper than the dentist.

Gotcha.I'm feelin' kinda whimpy right now.
That gun is the civilian version of the Air Force survival gun and it was designed with that weird squeeze trigger that could be used with mittens or frozen hands. It's amazingly easy to get used to.

Yeah I can see that it might be. I have to admit that whenever I use a gun I do so bare-handed. Just can't get used to shooting with gloves.

Never thought about the paracord trick. When shooting skeet etc. I wear a pair of construction gloves. The ones with the half-fingers. Works great for me.

That looks awesome! I'm sure my hands wouldn't agree with me at -25F below I too seldom ever use gloves when shooting grouse during the winter. I've got a ruger 10/22 LR rifle, 12ga shotgun that I use for grouse hunting. I'd prefer using 4shot or even 6shot if I can get my hands on a few boxes to hunt grouse. Now as far as a air rifle goes, we've got a .177 cal pellet gun that is powered at 1000fps. Found out that the Match point pellets are better suited for knocking down those grouse rather than using pointed/domed/rounded pellets. A .410 would be great too, I have got to get a couple .410's for my young boys to enjoy hunting at their young age.

I have a Remington 20 gauge youth shotgun. Small and easy to pack. Grew up with 22 and 410 but the 20 gauge is my first choice now
