I am also intrested in using 160's for coon this year glad to hear they will work well, I just got 1/2 doz. Hopeing to make boxes to set them in that will keep dogs out. I understand that putting a longer top on the box that overhangs the opening will discourage dogs. Do any of you have any idea how much overhang?
And one other question could I put a coni on each end of the box? I put corn food plots out for deer and game camrea pics in the fields at night sometimes show 6 or 8 coon in a photo!!!
FIRST POST here so sorry if I have too many questions!

You can reduce the chance of a dog catch by how you make your boxes - tons of info on this site about that. Also, use baits and lures that are less attractive to dogs. Depends on your state laws if you can stick a coni at each end of the box. Here in KY you can not do that as all land traps must be set at least 10 feet apart. Would be a pretty darn big coni box!

Here in Pa the openings must now be restricted to 50 square inches or to say a 7" x 7" opening. then the trigering device must be 7" inside the box. Mine are 7 1/2 to be safe and game warden proof. They also need to be staked down. I have also gone to using pans instead of trigger wires.
Those restrictions are only if you are using bait. One thing about your idea of 160's at each end is it might be big but it will have eye appeal. My boxes are 20 inches long with 1/4 screen in the back. But a walk through would work too. I'd make it about 30" long. I've already been thinking about it myself.
That recess would also keep the deer out.

The 160 in a wooden or wire cubby makes a great coon set. Always cut the notches for the trap far enough back to prevent dog catches.

There is no such thing as a dog proof box that works for catching coons or larger animals. Lots of trappers have seen where a dog has refused a box but that doesn't mean they work at prevent dog catches. I've owned a few dogs and I don't think I've ever owned a dog that wouldn't shove it's face into a box to get the bait.

You're better off trying to figure out a way to keep dogs out by elevating your boxes or maybe following the lead of NY regs.

MN just went through a bunch of problems with dogs and it's only a matter of time before we can't set them on the ground so the smart trappers are already trying to figure out ways to continue using them off the ground. My cousin who hunts but doesn't trap sent me some videos that show boxes don't stop dogs. I'll see if I can find his email.

look for the coons trails through the grass set them and whack-coon. dont even worry about dogs and carry less gear! Get yourself some MB stands. Dont even need bait! spend no money on wood for coni-boxes. Great system! Try it, it works!

if it's a coon trail, a dog can sniff the coons scent that was using it and follow the scent right through the trap. Results= no good. I hear you but its not that simple.

Never had a dog in any of my trail sets 160-180s in 29 years of trapping. Boxes or buckets with bait in them will never give you that kind of result unless they are above ground. Not saying that it is impossible, but it would have to be a squatty little dog a long way from home to get into a properly set 160 in a coon trail.
