I need to know if a 9' ceiling height will be enough to pull coon on an electric skinner. I bought ADC's base just so you know.

I wouldn't go any shorter than that, mine is 8.5ft and gets maxed out on the big coons. If you can go more I would.

It is going to depend on how high the mount is off the floor. My machine has a hookup of 18" off the floor and I have 10' ceilings. I cut a hole for the ceiling to extend the pole through. It will get nearly maxed out on big coon, and real close on coyotes. I know this is not adc's base but might be helpful.

I agree. You can get by with it shorter but you'll need to lower and regrip the hide mid-pull. If you can box out a way to get it higher up to the rafters IMO it would be a worthwhile summer project.

I was thinking of mounting my winch on the floor. running my cable up to the ceiling, to a pully then down to the base. What do you think? Even if I have to double pull one out of every 10 I can deal with that.

That should work ok for you. I'd build a cover for the hoist to keep all the gunk off it and be sure that pulley is mounted solid. Them hoists pull hard. wink

Oh, and thanks again for buying the base from me!

I made my skinner at an adjustable height of 12ft. of course my ceiling is not tall enough, so I put wheels on the back, so you rock it back and wheel it out doors if needed.. here's a pic. of my skinner desighn..

Thanks guys for the input. Trying to figure out a way to do it without cutting a hole in my ceiling.

I've got to do something, my shoulders won't take many more years pulling by hand.

I'm making one of wood with just a come a long as hoist. Made it tall and it blew over and broke the 4x4 post. So now I got the idea to rebuild it laying horizontally instead with an adjustable scab 2x4 to be able to lengthen it as needed.

Okiesawyers, that's a heck of a nice setup you built.

Thankyou... It took me a couple of tries to get it right. But it turned out. I still have a few more bells and whistles to add, first thing is a knife holder, then it needs paint. This one was my prototype, I'll make a couple of more too sale, when I get caught up on the rest of my manufacturing projects..

In all honesty - cut the hole in the ceiling. Frame it up, sheet it, insulate it. IT IS WORTH EVERY BIT. I managed to get my winch 13+ ft. - Can't ask for anything better!

I can't say how GOOD they are as in lasting years. But I bought the one from Harbor Freaight and it lifted my skinny 165lb. butt up with ease.. They run around $110..

I'm still using my original $100 harbor freight hoist, thousands of critters and no sign of slowing down....

Mine is from Princess Auto (Canadian version of harbor freight) . If you read the info, it's rated for 220lbs, if you clip the cable to the hoist, it shortens the length but doubles the strength (now 440lbs). Even at 440lbs, there is still enough lentgth for my 13+ ft setup. If you think you will be pulling more than 400lbs while skinning trapping critters, I'd like to see it.
