It is very rare to ever see a black bear out of his den in mid winter, although I have seen grizzly tracks in mid Dec here. I have seen about 5 or 6 black bears wandering in the snow in Jan and Feb over the years. They were all during a really cold snap, 10 below or more. The first time I seen fresh bear tracks in Jan and it was almost 20 below I was quite suprised. Just wondering if any of you have seen the bears move at all in the cold.

On thanksgiving morning in 1982 there was a grizzly at my waterhole at minus 32.


It's not uncommon at my place to see grizzly tracks at 10 below. I think they are just then getting serious about finding a place to camp.

Here ,after freeze up, uncommon.

Not here unless disturbed by a logging operation.
