So what does everyone think of the reality TV shows about trappers set to start airing this year? Trapper & Predator Caller is reporting three new shows all of which center around trapping are in the works this year. One show "Mountain Men" is going to air next month on the history channel. One of the three trapping stars, is none other than Alaskas own Marty Meierotto.

If they were actually documentaries, I would be OK with it. But they are not. They are pure entertainment, not education.

The production companies will do ANYTHING to boost the number of watchers and get ratings.

Little good can come of this.

Can it be good: yes. However, like Pete said, little good can come of this.

X 2 !!!!

If they would focus some attention on the need for population control of predators that would MAYBE educate some of those
who know nothing of trapping and still envision traps with jagged-steel jaws,hoping-up out of the dirt and breaking bones,

But, that wouldnt boost ratings, so It's going to be alot of drama, real or perceived, thats what sells,,,

I think It will just encourage a bunch of yahoo's to go set bucket-traps to "see what they catch"

There is a California based production company currently looking to do a program on trapping in the U. P. of Michigan. The individual posted a thread on the Michigan Sportsman trapping forum.

I guess we will have to wait and see how even handed the end result might be. But I, like Pete, also have mixed emotions.

Hopefully it shows trappers in good light. I agree with Pete about the entertainment part. I have heard that Swamp People has given people that otherwise wouldnt have known just how many gators are out there and the need to manage them so maybe it wont be so bad.

One thing is for sure, the vast majority believe every single thing they see on TV, so it has the potential to be real good or real bad.... might give fur prices a boost:)

As soon as the public sees a cute little marten dead or otherwise hanging by his foot in the dreaded steel jaw leg hold trap what do you think the result of that will be? Does seal hunt ring a bell?

last year an outfit out of Massachussets called "Powder House Productions" were interviewing trappers, Wardens and whatever for a show on the Animal Planet.
Turned out and I'm sure for entertainment to be called "North Woods Law" and there was little about trapping, and more about wardens chasing a variety of law breakers.
The show ran for 6 episodes and I do believe there will be more in the future.
Only time i can remember a trapper (If you can call him that?)looking bad was this one guy who they suspected of setting a snare and killing a coyote.
It was from an iterview with a trapper on this series where i learned beaver castor was used for flavoring in vanilla ice cream.--Enjoy!

We had the french ontario television crew ask to film on a couple of our traplines a couple years ago. They are pro trapping to begin with(a french heritage type thing)so we agreed.the trapping consisted of underice beaver, marten in coni boxes, lynx and fox with snares, and a wolf set up.All the animals are generally dispatched in these sets but to make sure the trappers involved went out the day before filming to make sure that everything was acceptable for the public. All turned out well but it only will take one bad catch to turn off the public.I think Its neccessary for the trappers involved to check everything just before the film crew shows up.This way you have control on what goes out.

I agree Dirt! W17 your right of course, gators dont pull at the heart strings to hard. If the shows could help joe public understand that trappers are simply harvesting surplus animals, and that trapping is one of the very few renewable resources we have they might do a lot of good. I guess only time will tell.
