There has been a couple of questions about the Milk Jug Set the Jack Pine Savage used to catch 207 Weasels in 3 weeks last winter. Arnie wrote an excellent chapter in the most recent FTA book - Favorite Sets of Top Trappers - Volume III. I will not even begin to cover the information Arnie included in that article but here is a couple of picture so you get the general idea.

If I make any mistakes in describing the set perhaps the Jack Pine Savage himself will correct me !! Or maybe his wife !!! grin

Notice the use of flagging so the set could be located after a night of heavy snow.

Weasel needs to stand on the pan to get the prize ! smile The flap serves as a canopy to help protect the trap from snow.

The chain as well as the long spring are run out the back via a small flap cut in the back of the jug. Chain should be fastened in the event of an incidental catch !

Bait is suspended through the cap via wire. I know Arnie prefers Beaver soaked in Anise. He usually has lots of bait pre-wired so he can quickly just slide the wire up through the lid. I believe Arnie ran about 50 sets of this nature to set his new personal record.

Good post. Do you need to cut a pile of logs like that for every set?

Here is the link to the book. Maddog47 has a great article on catching Bobcats in Conibears also in there !

The 1-1/2 long spring is what most Weasel Trappers choose as it serves as a kind of body-grip when trapping those little buggers ! \:\)

2poor-have you given any thought to READING Maddog's article about catching bobcats. I just thought that you could use all the help you can get.

I use the same set up. But, where the trap used is the 1 1/2 long spring, I prefer a 1 1/2 jump. The jump is easier to get into the jug. You still need to cut the hole in the back for the chain.

The nice thing about this set up is that if a mink comes along, you will hold it. If you use the wooden rat traps, it won't hold a mink or a long-tail weasel. I know this from my own experiences with the rat traps.
