I use plan parafin wax. I bought 4 10lb blocks at hobby lobby and a new 16 quart pot from walmart. Plan parafin wax seems to work just fine for me and I can dip 4 650's, 12 DP's, 6 1.75s or 8 1.5's at a time.

I find to keep the wax on a trap well is to let the trap come to the same temp as the wax. If you take a cold trap and just dip it in the wax the wax will not seal to the steel. Be sure your trap in dry.I like to remove my traps from a boiling pot then are being dye/cleaned in this way it dry faster. I like strait parafin best. I find bee wax has a smell a good smell that that makes coons grey foxes want to dig.I know there are 1000's of trapper that use bee wax. I am just saying what I learned to be true.

Just remember dry trap and remember to let the trap stay in the hot wax till the whole trap the same temperature as the wax.

Good luck

Correct. You must leave the trap in the hot wax long enough to get hot or the wax will not adhere well. If properly done, the trap looks wet when the wax dries. It is actually amazingly durable.

I use paraffin from the craft store that has laid in pine boughs all summer then it is mixed with a toilet bowl ring and some pine resin after I pull the trap out I shake it really well and hang it up to dry after it is dry I store them either in apple crates or 5 gallon buckets with pine boughs covering them

Do your wax job like this and it will be near perfect.

Why add pine resin when you don't want your trap to have any smell? K-9 are not scare of steel they dig because they think it dose not belong there. If you think I am wrong try placeig a dirt hole or flat set with a rusted trap by a old feild plow or hay rake junk car they won't dig or uncover.

If you are trapping in a mix of locations (hardwood, pine forest, fields) stay away from the odors.

Heat a wax of about 130 deg F melting point to 220/290 deg F. Dip traps until they stop bubbling. High melt wax and water under the wax are the two main causes of wax chipping off.

wax never seals as well to steel if there in water mixed in. That why my above post said be sure trap is dry. Yes you can over heat wax just like cooking oil it will start to burn and I am not talking about fire. But be very careful it dose not catch fire as well.

The toilet rings realy work well when added to the wax. Every season I add a pound of wax and part of a ring.

Dont put a toilet bowl ring in it. It is not needed and just makes for a inferior coat of wax. Use straight parrifin or some resin with it. Notice how soft that wax ring is. U dont want that on your traps.

IMO You really don't need to wax traps! When I first started out I thought I needed to do it all, but after doing it it really makes a mess of things and I think it picks up more unwanted odors by doing it!

No you do not need to wax a trap to catch any K-9. But it helps pervent rusting and and makes for a faster and smoother working trap IMO.It allows to clean your traps in the spring so there ready in the fall either though the trap should not rust after if kept dry.One must alway remember wax will hold oder so clean wax but be used or this can cause for less catches.Remember the K-9 or any other target is not scared of steel their thing is if smelled why is it here. Look at snares no one get as concerned many even don't wear gloves.

Yes, you do. It makes the wax "Smearier" and less likely to flake off. I add 1 TB wax ring to about 10 lbs hobby wax.

Nice. Ask a question about using a product that you have zero experience with, gather and absorb as much controversial information about waxing traps as you possibly can within 6 days, decide to rather use oil to retard rust instead of wax anyway, and then tell an experienced trapper that you disagree with his preferred method of mixing waxes.
How can you disagree with him if you don't have a leg to stand on? You said you "Never waxed traps before", but in less than a week you're telling others how to do it.
Gotta love the instant internet forum experts.

Breaker Ron Marsh. Are you getting the 220/290 deg F. in a double boiler set up?
Probably a dumb question but you got me thinking, again.
I did get a much better thermometer, just havn't used the new one yet.

Folks when Ron speaks of wax, it's a good time to listen up.
He has taught me more about wax than three generations of candle makers have.

the guys that give good advice dont post here much anymore because of guys like you two, why waste the time trying to teach someone anything when they are just going to stay stuck in there own rut and not want to learn. its a little annoying when guys who are willing to help someone come along and a 14 year old kid or a 2 coyote a year guy tells them they are wrong. there is some good information in this thread and you chose to ignore it and tell these nice folks who WANT to help you there wrong and you wonder why guys dont wanna give good advice from years of personal experience? beachcomber hit the nail on the head

But before you dunk them in the oil, throw some fish oil in there, and also a teaspoon or two of skunk essence. That will add back in the need for remakes. Sounds to me like both yote and The Kid need the practice...

Its mixed in the wax ,not just a ring ,the wax that most mix it in on has a higher melt piont and it will bring it done to a happy medium

waxs come in 3 melt ranges low ,med, high and theirs no purrfect one so most mix to make a ratio, the same as adding the resin

32 years refining wax another 8 yr testing wax blends for trapping. Us a pure 130 deg. melting point wax for the best result. Blending waxes can cause you a lot of problems. Buy your wax from a person that knows trap wax or a trapping supply house.
