BTW, I use 3/8" re-bar cut into 18" lengths, Grind the "serration" off the rod on 1-end about 1.5" down,
then go buy in bulk 7/16 nuts, place rerod in vice and use an impact-driver to "thread" nut unto rod,
If you push them they will start to thread themselves on the bar and when it gets down to the remaining
serrations on the rod, it will stop turning, stop there
Put the rod on flat-ground and with a 3# hammer smash the nut a little
then throw them in some water,(add some vinegar or even ice-melt) and let sit for a couple days
When you remove them from the water ,let them dry for a couple days and they will rust that nut unto
the rod so solid you wont ever get it off !!
They can be easily removed with a ratchet,by putting a 3/4" socket on it and spin a couple times,
total cost per-rod,about $1-each ,,
For sandy or loose soil I only use duckbill earth anchors, with 18" of 1/8" cable attached

then it would appear a whole-bunch of other people are wrong too,,
The only wood I trust to hold a yote better be rooted into the ground and green still,
Letting an animal take off with your trap is the worst feeling in the world,,

I have trapped 30 yrs and over that time caught 100's of furbearers with wood stakes, including plenty of coyotes. I have never had a wood stak. Ive fail to hold any of them. You are talking from your ideas. I am talking from plenty of experience.

How bout wooden stakes for coons? I was told 1 1/2 x 1/2 x 18in with a hole 5in up from the bottom would hold any coon. He also said he had held an otter with that set up one time. Just wondering did anybody test an see how they held up? Wood would make a lot ligther load this fall.

Wooden stakes work fine. They just are not so easy to work with. Harder to fasten trap to I don't like to use wire on a stake on dry land I'm sure it more of a mental thinking it will twisted and break.metal stakes drive better in rocky ground. But a good wooden stake pulls out harder.

Remember you can most offen find free metal to make stakes.you just may not have a standard looking stake for each trap. One can use steel pipe, rerod, angle Iron, used metal post use on road signs, reflector post. need away to cut them and a welder to set them up.

Russ Carman shows how to make a very good wood stake in his Fox books.(and maybe in his coyote book, cannot recall)
I have used a lot of wood stakes for fox trapping and then for those darned coyotes when they showed up. I started using a different style than Russ shows then went to his after his first fox book came out. Wood stakes are fairly cheap, very light and hold like the dickens in the right environment.

They work very well, but but but, in my opinion they are a lot of work. Not the making of them but driving them, then even worse, pulling them, LOL. You can drive one with an with a light axe or camp axe but I liked MR. O'Gorman's High Rolling Hammer when he came out with it.
I admit I was very old fashioned but it worked. Every where? Of course not, let us not be silly and think that every stake system is perfect for every location.

I went to using re-rod which I found a lot easier to drive and pull but a LOT heavier.
Now I am going more and more to very good quality coyote style drags with long chains and am eliminating all the stake driving. But again they are heavy if you walk far, which I admit I do.

Best of luck
Mac

Most old-time trapping books talk about the use of wooden stakes.

I know that wooden fence posts outhold steel any day, but they sure are harder to get in the ground. Helps a lot if the ground is wet. I also assume that the wetness makes the wood swell and hold even more tightly.

An that is why I asked on this subject. I have plenty rebar stakes. I work 10 to 12hrs a day 6 an 7 days a week. My time is limited. About 75 percent of my traps im walking. Anything that can make my load lighter, an hold coons im all for. My yote, fox, cat, traps i will use rebar.

Wood cut on the line is what the old timey free trappers used, and they worked pretty good for them.

Cut a 4" piece , drill in center (3/16-1/4) run cable thru hammer a annealed nut on and the other end make loop and a bother nut hammered closed , their not the best but they make a Iowa style anchor without welding if able to weld instead drilling weld nut to center and attach cable on they work but have to play with the driver so they won't hang and pull back out ( grind it small than the conduit )

I can picture how making these would go in my head... but does anyone want to share pics some they've made? Great idea! I'm impressed by the stuff you guys on here have crafted, awesome ideas for a new trapper and a guy who loves to tinker around building stuff.
