Clark the last part of D.L. Millers reply is spot on....

Where you see cat tracks follow them either where they are going or where they came from. That will show you some opportunities to choke them down...

Northernoutdoors, yes cats like gravel pits especially if they're sandy areas there too. Great place to track them also. Cats here feed on turkeys a lot so find the turkeys or bunnies and you'll find the cats. Actually, find where turkeys used to be abundant but aren't anymore and I bet there's a cat nearby.

The more you learn about cats, it might be the more you find out they are similar. The methods used have more to do with habitat and local weather conditions but the cats can all be caught in similar fashion the big boys tell me anyway.

This week my daughter found bobcat tracks going down to a 20ft wide creek at a crossing. We could not find where they departed. Do they swim intentionally? Too deep to wade it.

We were scouting some streams and looking for crossing points. Typically we a well frozen tight by the opening of cat season. Will they still use logs and rocks to cross when iced up, or just straight across the ice?

On the bright side we found a fair amount of cat sign since February in the area. Areas that are mostly bog on ariel photo's. But the sign we have found appears mostly on the perimeters of the boggy areas.

If you have enough money in the kitty, buy a copy of June's Bobcat DVD. Its the cats' meowwww. Purrfect video and sound quality. Lots of great information to fancy-feast your eyes on....

I found my cats as I was trapping coyotes. I was using post sets with #3 montanas. If you have logging going on in your area and you do have cats they will come. Caught 11 here in Pa last trapping season (only permitted to keep one) Most caught on edges of clearcuts on logging roads. Used both bobcat-n-coyote gland lures, same with their urines. Missed afew more, tracks in the snow.
Did catch some in #1 3/4 Duke 4x4 offsets. They held the cats with no problem, but I'd rather use the larger traps.
