How about those taken in the new predator control areas. You can sell the skins from ones in those areas I think, or does that just apply to black bears?

You can sell parts including (sealed) skulls and untanned hides with claws attached from predator control areas (with a permit). You can sell fur made into handicrafts from non control areas. See pg 17 in the regs

I don't know what the regs are in AK, but I know it's illegal to buy or sell bear skulls in WA. See WAC 232-12-071 section 2c: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=232-12-071
If you are visiting another state and buy a bear skull you can bring it back to WA, but you need to report the importation to F&W. Crazy regs!

I know in the previous bear control area we could sell the grizz skull. I had one and it had a seal that said "legal to sell" on it.

Oh...predator control areas. Why not ask for skulls from there then. As for "gifting", true...but a very grey area I for one don't tread in...often. smile and you originally didn't ask for a "gift".

We should have known Dirt would have that info. The man was an "employee" on the cheap for the "good ol boys" club.

One question before you slam the door Dirt!!! Was that skull boiled or
was it cleaned by maceration? Look's like a black bear skull I just
pulled out of a bucket of water after about a 2 month soak.

Spek, I hope you had your gas mask on when you did that. I did three black bear skulls one time and the smell stuck to my nose hairs for a week.

My taxidermist had a bucket like that.... and it didn't smell at all...

He hurt his back so asked me to dump it.... once the seal on the water was "broken" I never smelled such a stench....i gagged several times.

I have a bucket in the yard with the lid on it, that contains a grizzly skull I intended to clean up last spring. it started to stink in the spring, so I put it in the bucket with the lid.

now, i am afraid to open it.

Be very afraid. I puked three times before I got the bucket completely dumped out. The maceration works like a charm, but stinks like he.ll..

Yeah. It stunk a bit. Quite a bit. smile But it had all the same coloration that Dirt's grizzly skull has. I put it in another bucket
with some bleach in it for an hour or so to kill the stench. It didn't
work. Still smelled deadly, but it took the black coloration out. It
is now on it's third day in water and dawn dish soap.

Buck up Hup and go pop the lid. smile

I just learned a new word "maceration". Thanks! Boiled years ago! Never bleached. Probably not too fresh when I boiled it from the looks.

Thanks for the answer Dirt. I don't use that term in real life, it's easier to say "let it rot in a bucket of water". But I see it used on
here so wanted to impress everybody. (Of course that effort failed,
again).

I did maceration on some skulls last summer. I changed water every week. They never got black. They are still in buckets waiting for me to me degrease.

It is much easier to put the skulls in the mail and send to my buddy with beetles though! smile

I walked into the "beetle room" at the UAF museum one time. From the smell in there, I could have sworn that there was a bucket of water with a bear skull in it in there somewhere.....!

I have a bucket with a wolf and three wolverine skulls in it. It sat outside in the sun macerating all summer last year. In the fall I carefully decanted the slime and liquid off. Two of the neighborhood dogs died from the stench. A few others would retch everytime they ran past on the road.

Now I know why my mother told me I should never macerate. Maybe she said masticate. It was a long time ago.
