You should check out the lure topic under trapping only now. I'm probably around 2 maybe 3.

Solid 3.5 here on your run of the mill dirthole. Cool idea Northwind.

Nice visual. I go 2 on the call/strong lure, 4 on the the gland type lures, and much more than 8 on my homemeade baits. From what many say, some of the commercial baits are quite funky, so I would tone it down to 8 for them I guess. I trap a little of everything, and just started honing in on the coyote the past three years so I am interested in what some of the more experienced guys use.

I'll go 2 on the call lures and 4 on the gland lures, doubling the amount in the cold winter months and when sets are made at random not knowing the precise animals line of travel.

Good idea Northwind!!! For skunky lures I usually use A light 2 or so, if directly at the set, but a 3 for a call lure up 4' high. For gland type lures along w natural bait, a 3 or 4.

I'm a 5 on all lures. Probably not right with strong smelling lures, but it's what I do!

Wow, this is one of the best topics I've seen here yet, seriously. I never know what someone means by a "little bit" or a "good amount", etc.
I've been using about a #3 on everything, but it's not working out so well. Meaning, I haven't connected with a coyote yet. Obviously I fall under the category that Asa mentioned of not knowing exactly where they are traveling. Perhaps I will try a size 6 and see if results change.

You ask a loaded question. Depends on time of year, trapping pressure, type of lure. I feel many use to much lure in early season and not enough in cold winter temps.

for call lures i am probably a 2...depending on the lure...something real skunky i go a bit lighter..allagash fur call for example ive done tons of sets on an ounce and still have a few sets left in the bottle...
gland lures probably 3-5 depending on the set and how "foxy" the lure is smelling...
depends on the weather too..cold/wet i will go a little heavier..nicer weather i will go lighter..
i think i have a broken sniffer though...some lures i just cannot make out much of a smell at all...believe it or not gusto is one of the lures i see noted on here for being known as strong...maybe i got a bad bottle...but it doesnt smell strong to me at all..allagash and windwalker and such smell tons stronger to my sniffer...used a few different red fox gland lures and some stunk...some smelled REAL foxy..some didnt smell like much at all...if it smells strong to me i will go lighter..
once in a while i get crazy and go so heavy i can smell the skunk a good ways away down wind LOL...when that happens i know i can use less of that particular lure..

I dont know much and only have this year as a reference but I started off the season a #3 and gradually backed off towards the end of the season to a #1. As I slacked off I started catching more yotes with less lure. I caught 21 yotes this year and most of them was with the lesser amounts. Also I seen more of digging response with the lesser amount.

With much more than a 2 on my sandwich I can't taste the bologna. Honestly, this is great for the new guy(me) as the only description I've really visualized before is "pea sized". So all my lures & baits have been that.

I use a #1 on lures like canine call, and go 2-3 on gland lures.I don't think I ever go more then a #2 on any stronger lure that I use in dirtholes.canine call, all I ever use is a drip or two down the hole.

I caught 72 coyotes this year using a pinto bean size clump of lure and bait, and less when using the call lures, I can't remember the numbers of the original post. This works well throughout our season, but it does'nt get as cold here as the northern states.

3 on the lure. Bait, I use at least 3 chunks of bobcat 1 inch or 2 in size in RK Predator Plus solution down a 8 or 10 inch dirthole. More bait = more digging IME. More lure = more rolling IME

I start with less than your scale starts at,maybe .5, you can always add more but its not easy to remove. With too much I think it can take too long to mellow out,too many oppossum, not enough first night catches.I have been tinkereing with no lure on set up day,I do this because I find I can set more clean traps if I leave the lure + bait home and just concentrait on the set, next day I bring the lure along and lure up without touching the set.I have also just gone back around after the steel is strung to lure.

Number 4 call lure number 6 on glandlure Bait is tablespoon or so home made so I use a little more than the stuff I buy. Always a shot of urine I catch a few with nothing but a blind set every year.

1 to 1.5 with a good lure. If it takes more than that I would question how good your lure is or your location. I have caught as many as 75 coyotes on an ounce. I only use a 4 to 5 with the bait I use which i buy in gallons. It doesn't take much.

Great thread! By the way, who was it that said that someone (was it Mr. Charles Dobbins?) said "all you need to catch a beaver is this much", which was just a toothpick dipped into the castor...? And sure enough, it was; had a beaver there the next day!
