Some say they use just a little lure and some a lot... Just for squirts and grins, how much lure do YOU use? Lets say your avg. set or feel free to make it as complicated as you want. lol...

I'll go 2 on the call lures and 4 on the gland lures, doubling the amount in the cold winter months and when sets are made at random not knowing the precise animals line of travel.

Good idea Northwind!!! For skunky lures I usually use A light 2 or so, if directly at the set, but a 3 for a call lure up 4' high. For gland type lures along w natural bait, a 3 or 4.

Wow, this is one of the best topics I've seen here yet, seriously. I never know what someone means by a "little bit" or a "good amount", etc.

I've been using about a #3 on everything, but it's not working out so well. Meaning, I haven't connected with a coyote yet. Obviously I fall under the category that Asa mentioned of not knowing exactly where they are traveling. Perhaps I will try a size 6 and see if results change.

You ask a loaded question. Depends on time of year, trapping pressure, type of lure. I feel many use to much lure in early season and not enough in cold winter temps.

for call lures i am probably a 2...depending on the lure...something real skunky i go a bit lighter..allagash fur call for example ive done tons of sets on an ounce and still have a few sets left in the bottle...

gland lures probably 3-5 depending on the set and how "foxy" the lure is smelling...

depends on the weather too..cold/wet i will go a little heavier..nicer weather i will go lighter..

i think i have a broken sniffer though...some lures i just cannot make out much of a smell at all...believe it or not gusto is one of the lures i see noted on here for being known as strong...maybe i got a bad bottle...but it doesnt smell strong to me at all..allagash and windwalker and such smell tons stronger to my sniffer...used a few different red fox gland lures and some stunk...some smelled REAL foxy..some didnt smell like much at all...if it smells strong to me i will go lighter..

once in a while i get crazy and go so heavy i can smell the skunk a good ways away down wind LOL...when that happens i know i can use less of that particular lure..

I dont know much and only have this year as a reference but I started off the season a #3 and gradually backed off towards the end of the season to a #1. As I slacked off I started catching more yotes with less lure. I caught 21 yotes this year and most of them was with the lesser amounts. Also I seen more of digging response with the lesser amount.

I caught 72 coyotes this year using a pinto bean size clump of lure and bait, and less when using the call lures, I can't remember the numbers of the original post. This works well throughout our season, but it does'nt get as cold here as the northern states.

3 on the lure. Bait, I use at least 3 chunks of bobcat 1 inch or 2 in size in RK Predator Plus solution down a 8 or 10 inch dirthole. More bait = more digging IME. More lure = more rolling IME

I start with less than your scale starts at,maybe .5, you can always add more but its not easy to remove. With too much I think it can take too long to mellow out,too many oppossum, not enough first night catches.I have been tinkereing with no lure on set up day,I do this because I find I can set more clean traps if I leave the lure + bait home and just concentrait on the set, next day I bring the lure along and lure up without touching the set.I have also just gone back around after the steel is strung to lure.

1 to 1.5 with a good lure. If it takes more than that I would question how good your lure is or your location. I have caught as many as 75 coyotes on an ounce. I only use a 4 to 5 with the bait I use which i buy in gallons. It doesn't take much.

I have to chuckle every time I see or hear this subject come up. Kind of like discussing and cussing women actually---Everyone has an opinion that probably does not relate to anyone else's ideas and theories.
When I was coming up in the business a very knowledgeable old coyote trapper loved to say he would rather have two drops of coyote urine for lure than a dead elephant. Made sense to me until I followed coyote tracks in the snow, coming from several different directions to where they had almost cleaned up a dead horse. Have followed coyotes in snow to many dead deer, antelope, and elk. However I have also followed them in snow to where they dug a mouse from under two feet of snow, or watched them through binoculars catching grasshoppers and other bugs, or seen them eating berries and fruit.
One drop or two drops of lure may be all that is needed most of the time, because most lure is just some kind of curiosity attraction anyway, since it is not a smell that actually occurs in the animals normal travels---any more would tell the animal before he gets to it that it is not something he is seriously interested in. However some lures and or baits probably can not be overused volume wise, because the odors really are highly attractive----Kind of back to the dead horse.
One thing is for sure, we are only humans trying to guess at what the animal smells or what he thinks about the odors and quantity of it, until one of them learns how to talk, or we learn how understand their language much better than we do now.

Slim, 15 years ago I completely wore out my Predator Trapping Problems and Solutions video tape. I paid a lot of attention to the glob of lure you applied to your sets. I think about that every time a debate comes up about lure usage. Who really knows what spooks a coyote from a set and who really knows if it came back and got caught or if you caught a different coyote that stumbled through. Coyotes are a mystery to me and always will be. I never could get enough conversation with you at conventions or reading from your writing, heres what came in the mail the other day.

thanks for the compliments troops, but I was only trying to make people think and perhaps question some of their own personal ideas and theories about too much or too little lure.

I use to think alot about what is too much or too little lure being used at the set. I use to think too much about the whole coyote trapping process period. Information over load if you will. finally a time come when I quit thinking and started doing what has worked the best for me and that is going in and making my set with a firm bedded trap and guides in place, dipping my bait knife into my jar of whatever and applying it to the set so they have to work for it and getting the heck out of there without spending all day. I enjoy coyote trapping much more and have been more successful since I quit worrying about right and wrong lure application, Location is what is on my mind when setting a line.

Yup andys the man. Work find the critters. About the only thing id say is universal amongst k9 trappers is a solid trap bed.

Right location right lure I don't so worry so much about amount grab dab and go. And not do anything else until it catchs. Its the so so location that where amounts come in to play imo. And sets play a big part also as what used.bunch of year back I went out made sets for about2or 3 days I believe it was when cameback lure them and no lure up to this point.when day was done I was asking myself why I use bait or lure .I learned alot that day.puppy'slike fresh dirt adults not so much.

Slim and Andy are spot on. The key is to use well built lure at good locations, and traps bedded solid at well constructed sets. A well built lure will attract for months with one small application. Thanks

5-7 with red Fox gland. I'm tempted to use less to save lure at times. I believe it costs me fur.
