I use Formula one on everything.

Do I sometimes think to myself that I wish there was a cheaper alternative?.....yes.

Have I tried to find cheaper alternatives?....yes.

Do I still buy Formula one every year?.......yes!

Trying to save $20 on something (trapping) that gives me both joy and income for almost 6 months out of the year at times just doesn't make sense to me.

I'll keep using what works the best for me. Just my opinion.

Ya'll being awfully hard on a guy with just an idea or opinion on something.

My first guess at the makeup of F1 was latex paint (water-based.) Nothing wrong with trying to figure out what something is made of....not to copy and sell, but to just save money!

I still use F1, but it is very expensive and it wears off just as easily (maybe more so) as dye/wax or petro dips. It is easier & faster to use so that's why I still use it, especially on my beaver snares and otter conibears.

BTW, exterior latex paint will not cost 4 times as much as equal amount of F1. That would be $228 per gallon of latex paint! Person that made that comment must have not purchased much F1 at $57/gallon.

If you can get a latex eterior primer tinted to about whatever you want hydro seal or gripper is the older name made by glidden paints, they stick and hold up to bare metal a bit better than the regular exterior latex paint. and rustoleom or any oil base diluted with mineral spirits works great also again what ever color you want.

sorry that i didn't read all the posts, but i've been around latex quite a bit, and it never adheres to metal very well, once paint is set and after a while and abuse, one good scratch and it literally will peel off in big chunks.. so when you get an animal in it, i'd think that you'd come up to a pretty well bare paintless trap..

I got a question for you paint guys. You say after you paint your traps you let them hang out to air out for a few weeks. But what do you guys do during the season after you make a catch ?(I'm mainly talking footholds here). Maybe you guys have hundreds of traps and can replace the trap that has made a catch with a fresh one and wait until summer to prep traps again. I don't have that luxury so using F1 works best for me to keep as many of my traps in the grounds as possible. Im not trying to talk up F1 but I had a lot of dug up traps or traps with Just the dirt scraped off the pan by coyotes when I first started trapping because of the paint I used.( It was a rust paint and I know we are talking latex) So far with F1 no dug up traps or exposed pans. Some people will say they weren't bedded properly but I know they were rock solid.

" So far with F1 no dug up traps or exposed pans "

I have all kinds of complants over the years. Things that you would never beleave. Like mixing 1 quart FORMULA ONE to 5 gallon of water. Then complaining that the FORMULA ONE wont coat the traps.

But NEVER have I had ONE complant that a trapper has had their traps dug up because of FORMULA ONE.

I beleave that Asa. Did some test years ago when I first brought it to market.(I maybe wrong.Bet its easy enough to ask him.)

F1 works for me, personally it's all I use with the exception of a few of the 1216 larger bodygrips I spray painted .... black for foot traps and the brown for bodygrips and snares ..... the black is much more user friendly vs the brown due to the pigment but really no problem, perhaps a extra dip or two to get the desired coverage .. F1 is a trap coating not a dye

I put this stuff to the test ... I have dipped raw new straight out of the box traps with oil on them, I have removed oil and then dipped, I have slightly rusted and dipped .. I also took "dirty" traps, power washed and re-dipped.. all took the coating and all caught fur ... while putting Formula One to the test , each of these methods after being dipped the traps were allowed to dry no more than a couple hours and they were put in the ground ... the first check I had fur waiting on me ... yes, you can dip at noon and put'em in the ground at two ... but if done ahead of time, pre season dip, let dry as long as you can, then apply another two dip allowing a good dry time between dips .. the longer allowed to dry the harder the finish ... I personally have not used any product that a coon or similar critter cant polish off to some degree or entirely .. if I want to or need to pull traps and rotate/relocate I feel fully confident in re-dipping and putting them right back out on the line asap

a couple years ago, I was trapping beaver out of an impoundment , dredge spoils from a river bridge project were being pumped into this impoundment , I had not removed all of the beavers and was asked to suspend my task until they had finished pumping into that particular impoundment .... I had mb-750's scattered about, instead of pulling the traps I just tripped them ... long story short the water level rose more than expected due to the extended pumping .. it was almost three months before I was able to access the area and retrieve my gear ... keep in mind, these traps were subjected to salt/brackish water for almost three months .. the traps had minimal rust on them, mainly around the jaw rivets and the contact areas on the levers/jaws .. I assume so due to the moving parts and exposed bare or less coated steel .... the quick links and untreated 1/8 cable was in poor condition and heavily rusted while the traps were in decent shape ........ on another occasion a pond that I trap annually, while setting one year later I come across a 330 laying along the shoreline where I generally park, suppose my oversight and it just got left behind .. just laying on the ground for a year and by looking at it you would have never known it had been exposed to the elements for a year

overall I'm pleased with Formula One, it works for me and I will continue to use it

I have used the zinc rich paint referred to as cold dip it is galvanized in the can I do not know if it is still made I was using an oil based paint so I used mineral spirits to thin it with the coating lasted almost 2 seasons because I was mostly trapping rats with coon or fox it may not have lasted as long
