Just wondering what your favorite lures are to use for coyotes? This fall will be my first full season trapping so I want to stock up on a bunch of lures to try out this fall. I'm gonna make my own bait so I got that part covered just wondering what lures you guy have had good success with. Thanks

A post that I saw earlier which I use for reference is:

Besides Dobbins Canine Select and All call, in no particular order:

1. Carman's: Pro's choice, Canine call, Magna glan

2. Caven's: Gusto

3. Fox Hollow: GH-II

4. Miranda's: High Plains Predator call

5. Milligan's: Steppenwolfe, Cat-man-do

6. Marsyada's: #601 coyote lure supreme (awsome lure!)

7. R&M: Coyote Creek

8. Kaatz Bros: Toxi-Dog (great at post sets as well)

9. Leneon's: Coyote #2 super range all call

10. O'gorman's: Plenty Coyote, Missouri Breaks

I'm not an expert. But this supplies you with some names others have liked

My immediate hands down response with absolutely no hesitation.........Skunk essence....it reaches out a long way, lasts a long time and works like a charm...it is actually the only call lure i use...probably the only call lure i'll ever use...i've never seen anything even in the ballpark with competing with it

X2 to Forget lures. they work THE BEST in cold, snowy weather, IMO. They are made in canada and tested in cold weather. Not that the other lures don't work, i do not like to miss a chance to catch a coyote.

I did well with Fox Hollow's Voo-Doo this year. I caught a few on gusto, GH-II but the Voo-Doo really did most of the work.

A good coyote trapper can catch a coyote on just about anything....people who want a lure to do magic have yet to understand two things :

1 ) It's all about location and...
2) ..how natural the set looks !

That said, are some baits and / or lures better than others ?
Sure. But, IMO, a good bait and / or lure is only as good as the trapper using it !

agreed LT....location is key...i just like the skunk because it gives me a little cushion on location...if a coyote passes by 60 yards from my set he is going to pick it up....i just use it to get them over to the set...as far as the bait in the hole...i don't think it matters...as long as there's something in there...once you get them that far they oughta be caught no matter what....i would shy away from kerosene though smile

I'm not looking for a magic lure that's gonna bring all the coyotes running just some peoples favorites. By the looks of it everybody likes something different so that kinda proves your point LT. I'm just gonna go buy a dozen different lures and try them out. May even try my hand in making some of my own next year after I get some stuff gathered up this upcoming season. This spring I've just been kinda messing around catching a few coyotes off of some of my friends farms and have been having decent luck just using some simple plain muskrat glands. I have already learned a lot from the little bit of coyote trapping I have done and this fall I will be learning much more. Coyote trapping is starting to become an addiction. I have a feeling my bow will be collecting a little dust this fall.

It seems that everytime this subject comes up the favored lures are always the strongest call lures on the market. I have been in the lure making business since I was born 70 years ago and year after year the milder fox and coyote lures outsell the stronger one by two to one by experienced seasoned trappers. What this tells me is that seasoned trappers have the know-how to place sets on precise locations and from my own years of experience on the coyote line that milder lures cause more set working when the animal is required to move in closer to investigate. Strong call lure have a place on the market for those that have to make sets a small bit off precise location for a number of possible reasons like out of sight of passerbys and for use in extremely cold temperatures but strong lures are also the #1 reason for set avoidance from my experience and lure testings so using them when not essential can be counter-productive. I suggest that strong call lure users try a test by alternating sets with milder lures and they may be pleasantly surprised which ones produce the best. I once tested my #1 coyote lure alternated with my #2 stronger lure in sub-zero temperatures and I even surprised myself to find they both worked exactly equal, something I wouldn't have believed without the test! Anyone can make a strong smelling lure, just simply count a little higher while tipping up the skunk musk bottle.

Mr. Lenon,
How do you feel about using a sparing amount of a stronger "call" type luring say 12 in down a peep hole that is lightly covered with ground litter?

A good size bait pile in the winter is an amazing long distance call.

I trapped coyotes during the hot Summer months for 25 years during Michigan's bounty era. My favored dirthole lure was my stronger Coyote #2 Super Range All Call. I favor the #2 because of the skunk musk in the formulation, not because I needed a strong smelling lure in July and August but because I believe the addition of skunk odor in a hole set lure is the best suspicion remover there is, making a wary coyote possibly think a skunk is responsible for the odor and fresh digging. The secret is as you say Farmdog, using common sense when applying lure. I learned from experience how much I could use and accomplish calling an animal for a reasonable distance while not overwhelming their sense of smell in warm weather. Like most other novice trappers, when I first began trapping coyotes I thought that if a little bit of lure was good then more is better. Once I gained more experience and learned to back off on the loud call lures or to use a milder lure to begin with then the results were quickly convincing.

With all due respect Boco, finding where coyotes frequent by their tracks in the winter snow and then making sets right along their tracks and trails with a bean sized glob of lure or a few drops of urine gland passion scent on a nice conspicuous scent post as the call lure would be by choice rather than establishing huge bait piles.

I have a few I like but (as Asa states) my favorites seem to be the milder ones (for me anyhow).

Recently I have grown fond of Asa/s Bobcat lure for coyotes. There have been certain times when this was the ONLY lure they would work at a dirthole...including my other favorites.

I know you favor the Nature's Call Coyote lure too Calvin and that is far from being classified as a call lure. However, once one tries the Nature's Call lures they are fast becoming a best seller everywhere.

I doubt many farmers would like me starting bait piles on their property. Although bait piles and snares are very effective coyote takers. Thanks Mr. Lenon for your advice it is appreciated. Many if not all of your posts have taught me something and I look forward to reading more of them in the future.
